Default Flames Recent Trades: Players in, Picks / Prospects out

With the trade deadline approaching and people still debating Curtis Lazar's worth to the organization, I thought it was worth a ~3+ year review of Treliving's player-in, pick /prospect out trades.

I haven't by any stretch done any exhaustive research. I'm not even sure if the trades below are in order and I could be missing something. I just wanted to put all the picks (and who they turned into) and prospects in one place so we could collectively praise or crap-on the moves for years to come.

As of right now neither of the 1st rounders that Treliving has traded have come back to haunt us. Admittedly, the 2018 1st is WAAAY too early to tell. (But I like that Hamonic guy)

Not sure the agenda here really? Good debate during the 9-day break? Perhaps to provide some factual historical evidence to base our panic-level on if indeed our 2019 1st gets dealt for a true run at the cup?

What about players out and picks in? Is this more of a strictly buyers thread?

Glencross, Sven (unless the 2015 draft is your cutoff) Russell, Hudler Jones etc

One thing that is interesting from the 2 Hamilton trades is the Flames sent out their 2015 1st when acquiring Dougie but also acquired a 2015 1st in Hanifin when they traded him away.

If the Flames could have traded their 1st and 2 2nds to move from 15 to 5 at that draft I think everyone would have been all for it.

The other side of that trade was a 2016 3rd (Fox) and a 2010 5th (Ferland) landed the Flames 2013 5th overall in Lindholm.

No agenda here, because I liked the ultimate outcome of the trade but I'm not sure this is really a fair argument here.

With that 15th pick, Barzal would have been available and looking like the obvious choice.

Also Boston in 2015. If they would have just picked the three players after they would have had Barzal, Connor and Chabot. Jeeze, what a miss.

You're right...but at some point you can only compare to what was actually selected. If you start "Cherry-picking" among the next N picks you'll always find a good player that will make the trade look bad. So although you're 100% correct -> I think we can only base the comparison established player for pick using the actual pick.

I know it was a different GM, but in 2008 the Flames DID pick Greg Nemisz, not Tyler Ennis, John Carlson or Roman Josi.

In 2009, we DID pick Tom Erixon, not Kyle Palmieri or Ryan O'Reilly.

And....now I'm depressed!

Hmm...

I've maybe been the most vocal critic of the draft pick deficit spending but I feel as though the Lindholm/hanifin acquisition wiped most or all of that out, and the factor for me is cost.

You always want good players, having too many is a great problem, but when you look at what tkachuk is doing this year and then extrapolate that out to having another player doing similarly, you start to be able to forecast problems pretty quickly.

I think I'd probably prefer Lindholm at 4.9 to barzal at 7 or 8, especially when I consider the age and contract status of the existing group.

That Hamilton trade is such a grand slam walkoff home run Walk Off Grand Slam, I think it more or less has nullified that deficit spending. The only real way not having made those picks hurts now is not having a collection of secondary prospects the team could use to trade.

We never would have picked Senyshyn. I like to think of it as Barzal ++ versus Lindholm + Hanifin -- not sure what kind of defensemen you can get for Ferland and Fox, but I don't think it's Hanifin.

Nope. Walkoff Grand Slam.

Sorry, but the baseball fan in me can't have this just linger uncorrected.

Unless you are Boston, I guess.

IIRC the talk on draft day was that the Flames’ guy was Connor with that pick.

Anyone pay attention to Noah Dobson at the World Juniors this year?

I usually watch the tourney pretty closely but didn't see much of the round-robin and obviously there was no medal games. :-(

How did he compare to Bouchard?

The best part about this, is the head amateur scout for Boston at the time is now the interim GM in Edmonton.

Neoptism got him his first scouting job when his brother was attached to Phoenix. Somehow made it to head scout there. I have no clue how Boston/Chia hired him.

My favorite KG pick is Trent Frederick. And then maybe Gormley. Or missing on Barzal. I suppose in fairness he did have a two home runs - OEL and Pasternak,

He had been in hockey his whole life up until then, playing and coaching.

He earned his opportunities just like any scout does.

Not at all saying he will succeed as an NHL GM, but he certainly wasn't handed anything because of his brother.

Yeah, he was so good he wasn't an NHL or even an AHL scout until Wayne got to Phoenix. I'm sure that was just a coincidence. Lots of guys go right from a UHL job to a NHL position.

Who promoted Tod Button to Director of Scouting with the Flames, after 3 years of experience as an amateur scout?

That's the path most guys take.

He put his time in...believe me.

Definitely give him credit for the Pasternak pick If you read the comments after he was drafted, they thought he had a chance as a first liner but saw him as a second liner. So maybe a bit of better than expected.
