That's it? I definitely expected much worse after reading here how he embarrassed Talbot. I don't see any of that from that quote.
Its a culmination of all of it. Apparently Chiarelli and the rest of the Oilers *shudder* 'Brain-Trust' chose Koskinen over Talbot (new shiny toy over dented and worn out old one) but havent made any plans to do anything about it.
Really, going with two unsigned goaltenders and having to extend one over the other was a pretty stupid plan as far as plans go.
Because now Talbot still has to play for a team that indicates that they no longer want him.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I think its embarrassing for Talbot because this didn't need to be announced at a podium in the first place. Why take that moment to tell people you had to choose? The choice wasn't the point of contention. It was the the lame duck GM being able to sign it in the first place.
Then to publicly hope that the guy you didn't choose still plays well for you? Basically saying "He's done here, but we hope he doesn't hold a grudge."
Yeah, its embarrassing. For everyone, but I get why Talbot might feel singled out.

What would you like to hear? What is there to say that hasn't already been said? I had brief hopes when they hired Chiarelli and McLellan that they had finally figured it out, but we all know how that ended
I've been saying it for as long as I've been a member of this board - this franchise goes nowhere until they take away Lowe's keys to the building. Lump MacTavish and Howson in there too. As long as they have a voice - regardless how big or small - nothing is changing with this sad sack of a franchise.
“Yes I’m from Edmonton, no I don’t want any free sweatpants”
“Hi, This is Peter Chiarelli, no I won’t accept that trade”
“With the first overall draft pick the Calgary Flames select...”

I don't have any professional hockey experience, but how about this for a plan...
Trade any roster player not named McDavid, Pulujarvi, Yamamoto or Larrson, for players in the 22 to 25 age group who have the skills but are still 'putting it all together'. The only place to get value from what edmonton has to trade are in late bloomers who other teams are frustrated with. Remember that Lazar would be the second line centre on this team.
Populate the AHL team with these acquisitions. Bring up the best of your AHL team to take the place of the traded players. Make it clear that this is their only chance at a further contract and let their drive change the culture of the main group.
Hit on one or two of your callups making the team for next year, and one or two of your acquisitions, and you might have a prayer of turning this around.
Fire the scouting and development staff. Ignore the upper administration. Get fired. Have edmonton fans build a statue to you in town square.
I reality, they will play it safe and squander the entire. McDavid Era.

The crazy thing is that nobody asked him about Talbot. He's the one that made reference to choosing Koskinen over Talbot. It's one of those things you don't say in public when the player is still an active member of the team.

It started last year at their home opener. I was unfortunately there for it and they intolroduced it with their opening video. I was in tears laughing so hard but couldn’t get a good picture.

They could have just as easily not referred to him at all, or said that they still wanted to talk to him about next year. They basically said he's a lame duck, they aren't re-signing him and too bad for him.
I mean, everyone knows that Mike Smith won't be re-signed here. But Treliving isn't making a public pronouncement to that effect.
