I would like Zadorov on the Flames but there really isn't room on that left side moving forward. You aren't going to pay a lot for him if he's going to be your 7th defenseman and you don't want him playing ahead of Kylington and Valimaki long term.
Flames need some toughness and size but it's probably better to get that for the forward ranks. The 4th line LW spot is perfect for truculence. I say a Czarnik for Kyle Clifford is the type of deal Flames should make to "harden the team for the playoffs".

Mark Borowiecki? Alternate Captain in Ottawa, tough LD signed for another season next year at 1.2 million.

I just don't get the rumours regarding a depth LHD.
Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson
Valimaki - Stone
Prout
...how many more defencemen do we need for a playoff run? Kylington and Valimaki are both good and getting better every game.

Unless they want to dump Stone and keep Vali in the AHL and have an insurance policy for that. I wouldn't waste our picks on someone who wouldn't see the ice.

I am pretty wary about the Flames giving up too much at the deadline for a variety of reasons
I do however understand the looking at a depth defenceman angle, to me preferably a veteran. as a group those 9 dmen have 48 games of playoff experience- I realize the correct answer is you have to get experience somehow and I'd like our top 6/7 to just play their way through this and gain the experience themselves but I sort of appreciate the issue

I get this in theory, but Flames are 2nd overall and absolutely going for it all. Why waste a pick for a worse defenseman so one you have can develop? If they were in a wild card position this is exactly what I'd want them to do. Now, I'm not sure that makes sense

Catch 22 I suppose. They apparently aren't comfortable going into the playoffs with a rookie 3rd pairing. Yet a rookie 3rd pairing has helped propel them into the position they are in.
I say stay the course. If they falter, move a vet into the lineup then. Thus, if they shop for a depth D, make sure its a low cost 6/7 guy who has that experience.

I wouldn’t be crazy over a rookie third pairing in the playoffs, and if Stone isn’t in good shape you need a better option than Prout.
It’s insurance. And when the playoff game style and injuries come knocking you need good insurance.

He would also be expensive. Teams will be giving up assets for him as a long term piece. Not a rental.
He doesn't fit for the Flames unless they are moving one of Valimaki or Kylington out.

Flames window is just opening this year.
I would rather get toughness in the bottom 6 and shore up the backup goalie than worry about depth D.
I wouldn't be trading anything higher than a 3rd round pick for any of those pieces but the only other thing I would consider would be a package including frolik and a pick for Mark stone if he can be re-signed and we still have room for thachuk, Bennett, Rittich under the cap for next year

He's right, to avoid this situation again:
Leopold-Regehr
Lydman-Warrener
Gauthier-Ference
Montador-Commodore
EVANS
We apparently just need 9 NHL ready D men :P

Yeah, so much depends on Stone, and there, management has a lot of knowledge. We have none.
Luckily, I don't think you need a lot of assets to get insurance over Prout there. Some veteran expiring 4-6 D-man on an expiring contract on a non PO team shouldn't cost too much.

I think we need either 1 more really good option, or 2 mediocre options (to go with a "I-hope-he-never-plays" black ace option).
If I'm the GM I am expecting to lose 2 D-men in the playoffs.
WSH played 7 D-men in last years playoffs. PIT played 8 D-men the year before that (with Letang not playing at all).
Forget a rookie third pairing - how much ice time do you want Valiev to have? That is the concern for me.

Valimaki and Kylington are probably going to have solid careers going forward but in a 7 game series where the opposing coach can game plan around them specifically, take advantages of home ice and force them against their best players... It's a lot easier to see management's hesitance to throw these guys out there when they've been keeping their head above water against the weaker competition as it is.

If we're being intellectually honest, Rasmus Andersson is going to be more "gameplanned" against than either Kylington or Valimaki, whose weaknesses are far more overstated than Andersson's who tends to get exploited often. And between Andersson, Stone and Prout, we already have a saturation of #3RD.
Adding a Dman makes zero sense at this juncture. Especially when teams have won the cup rolling exclusively their top four Dmen. Look at the 2015 Blackhawks playoff ice time:
Keith - 31:07
Seabrook - 26:17
Hjalmarsson - 26:02
Oduya - 24:45
In all likelyhood if one of our top three D (Giordano, Brodie, Hamonic) gets hurt, we are probably screwed either way. If Hanifin gets hurt, no desperation deadline acquisition is going to have a better skillset and toolset to replace him than Oliver Kylington.

I understand where you're coming from. However I think they want to add somebody with playoff experience. The play does ramp up significantly in the playoffs and if one or two of the youngsters can't keep up, and/or there is a few injuries, they don't want to rely on Prout.

Yeah, and I can definitely see the desire to add a veteran - but I'd hope that the organization would trust the kids, at least to start. I feel like Kylington and Andersson, given their level of aggression (always standing up for each other and teammates), are pretty good candidates to rise to the occasion.
Acquiring cheap veteran depth definitely isn't a bad idea. I just wouldn't be super jazzed to see a 6/7 veteran d-man come in and instantly see Kylington get benched.
