Eesh. It doesn't make sense to me though, unless flames were expecting puljujarvi to drop beyond Edmonton and Vancouver, with them taking one of Keller and tkachuk each.

Edit: never mind, sureLoss started a new thread about it.
If it took Wideman who cares right? If it took Backlund? Would have sucked.

But the most important point in that statement is our scouting and ability to pick out talent that is worth it. Vancouver or Columbus or Edmonton couldn’t see the worth we saw in Tkachuk. Keep that view with who picked Valimaki. And keep that view in why we want to keep our first round this year. Kyllington, Andersson. Rittich. Dube.

Some smart people are building this team right now, with which we can not tell them how to do a better job. So much more qualified individuals than us fans could even imagine.

Look what is going on up north and just go along for the ride and be so happy with what this management has spent the time on and trust in these people especially Treliving and Peters that has made all of us fans at one time of another look stupid.

Let’s sit along for the ride and be fans and cheer this team on to the end

As mentioned, he grew up there. That is not enough on its own, but consider Mario Lemieux - he didn't want to sign with Pittsburgh. But he ended up staying there, and he (eventually) completely turned the franchise around. And he is now an owner of the team.

I think he would agree that sticking with the lowly Penguins was a good idea.

I think Columbus did just fine at that draft.

All the pressure in the world for the Finnish GM to take the Finnish star prospect. That took guts to take PLD, who, like Tkachuk, has turned out pretty good.

I think the Oil would've screwed up Chucky or PLD if they took them.
Their organization is toxic and even the most talented are not immune to it.

Team success aside, players love it in AZ. Great lifestyle. Out of the spotlight. The arena (once you get there) is really nice. Cheap margueritas. Lots of golf (handy because of your shortened hockey season).

Heck, Shane Doan chose living there and losing year after year rather than chasing a cup.

Jusso Valimaki’s return shaping the Calgary trade deadline approach is quite plausible. If Valimaki returns to pre-injury form, the Calgary Flames will not have to acquire a top-six defenseman. They can aim lower.

The problem is if things do not go so well. Giving up first round picks for rentals won’t sit well with the management of the Calgary Flames. Second round and beyond sounds less crazy. So a package of prospect/player and a second-round pick may net a third pairing player. Perhaps, that nets a second pairing defenseman.

If you look at the Coyotes first round picks over the last decade you would see they are probably better off with Matthews than any four year run of 1st round picks. They did get Keller and Chychrun in successive seasons but after that a lot of the players are no longer in the organization including Domi, Strome, Perlini, etc. They absolutely should be preparing an offer sheet.

I was hoping we would have heard something about Stone being able to go off blood thinners, but with the lack of news we can probably assume that didn't happen. With Stone being a big question mark the Flames really need a RD depth guy more than a LD depth guy.

Oh that’s fair. I’m more agreeing with the comment that Toronto doesn’t even blink while taking the picks. Not only does the situation drive up his cap hit, but the return would be astounding. You let him walk, especially with the roster they have in place.

If I’m Dubas I’m almost hoping this happens.

Elliotte Friedman in 31 Thoughts thinks Chris Kunitz makes sense for Calgary

rumors and speculation from Friedman's 31 thoughts

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...arelli-firing/

Oilers checked in on Burakovsky - but a couple of sources threw cold water on that
Oilers like Athansiou whose speed would perfectly compliment McDavid but no guarantee the Wings will move him and the price would be costly
Rumblings were they tried to do a bigger deal with Chicago
Trying to move Rieder to open up cap space

One team asked about Evan Bouchard but it went nowhere

a few sources indicated that Chiarelli came close to a blockbuster deal at the 2016 draft days before he traded Hall for Larsson
Chiarelli wouldn't tell Friedman about the details
there was a potential three way that never happened with the Flames moving up to 3, BJs moving to 4, Oilers dropping to 6

Koskinen's extension will have some effect on Rittich's next contract
It can't be used in arbitration though (which is good news for the Flames)

Capitals have asked for a couple of mid-to-high round draft picks (2nds and 3rds)
Those picks would give them the assets to chase what they need

Friedman thinks an 8 year deal for Matthews is unlikely
Maybe a 5-6 year deal and that will bring the AAV down below McDavid's

The CHL top prospects game in Red Deer gave many scouts the opportunity to watch the Flames/Hurricanes game
Believe the Leafs were watching Pesce rather than Hamilton

If Leafs decide to go after a LH d-man, their top target is Muzzin
Leafs have made it clear Kapanen and Sandin are no-gos in trade talks

Doesn't sound like much negotiation between Sens and Dzingel

A few contenders are looking at Chris Kunitz
Friedman thinks the Flames acquiring Kunitz make a lot of sense

Rangers scouts are consistently following the Avalanche
Don't think the Rangers will want anything from the Avalanche roster for say a Kevin Hayes trade

Avs will see what Nikita Zadorov can return

Dallas dangling Nichushkin, Ritchie, and Janmark

The Flames are obviously scouting someone on the Senators, maybe a conditional 2nd, and a guaranteed 3rd for Ryan Dzingel?

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Dzingel
Bennett - Jankowski - Neal
Frolik - Ryan - Hathaway

And wasn’t Chychrun using the Redwings first round pick for taking on Datsyuks contract too?

Who on this site also suggested Kunitz and got crapped on?

Edit - Worth noting here that
A) Treliving loves ex Blackhawks
B) Tried to get Patrick Sharp for this role

Kunitz. The same guy that elbowed Hamonic in the face? Pass.

I don't see how a 39 year old Kunitz improves the Flames. He didn't seem to have much of an impact for the Lightning last playoffs.
