Oh, well, back to managing the Chipmunks. Probably doesn't seem like such a bad gig after this experience.

Why not start a new Old Boys Club?

Vote Cameron McDavid for GM!

I look forward to the 2021 release of Peter Chiarelli's TellAll book where he spills the beans that Kevin Lowe was the defacto GM the whole time, and it was he who offered Hall for Larsson, and was the architect of the Griffen Reinhart deal.

Should be a page turner.

Between the contracts in place and what's in the system, any half-competent GM is going to look at this and stay far, far away. Their best bet is to find someone with a big enough ego to think he can come in and fix the mess Chia has left.

Or, OBC. Because Oilers.

I'm quit worried right now even though that team is loaded with bad contracts. At least Chia managed to squeak in that last deal with Koskinen to give his plan some longevity.
People who are worried that the Oilers are now moving in a direction of respectability need to give their heads a shake. Now?! Now, after more than a decade of laughable incompetence? Now, after inbred generational entitlement that is rooted so deep that no one ever actually leaves that organization after spectacular failure?

No.

Not even “not-Peter-Chiarelli” can save the Oilers.

No one can.

No one.

This. I think most who would even consider it would want to wait and be the GM after the next one. Let some other sucker burn it down (because that's what's going to happen even if they first try to avoid it).

With all of the recent speculation that the Oilers wanted to make the playoffs this season, is it unreasonable to think that Chia was fired because he didn’t want to try to go all in on this season?

Is the mandate of the interim still to make the playoffs at any cost - This season? I would imagine that’s likely.

Some of you worry too much. As a Flames fan, there is nothing to worry about here. Whoever takes over will undoubtedly be as bad, as they will be pressured to perform well early, despite there being no quick fixes for that team.

The ability to put a winning team around McDavid within a relatively short period of time is pretty much impossible given their current situation. It would take some elite wizardry by whoever the GM is. The only smart play for the organization is to actually trade McDavid and restock on assets that might give them more considerable depth. But knowing they will never do that...it is seriously the beginning of another rebuild. We should all be betting on when McDavid asks for a trade.

As disappointing as last nights loss to Detroit was, the decision to fire Peter Chiarelli was made before the game. Obviously, ownership and senior management have been considering this change for a long time.
How much do they want to bet had the Oilers gone 3-0 on the weekend with a good showing against the Flames and were 26-21-3 heading into the break on a 5 game streak, that Chia's job would be QUITE secure right now, even with a terribad Koskinen signing?

Oilers mgmt particularly hates looking inferior against their rivals. It has kind of become their stanley cup in a way as some have put since playoffs are a rarity up there, and a tired Flames team took them out easily. The breaking point was when they couldn't answer back twice after it to be able to dismiss it as a one off. You need no more confirmation of this than both firings this season followed poor performances after a poor performance against the Flames.

The best part of this is that it's going to be tough to fix this roster without just waiting out the bad contracts they have. What do they really have to trade of a value outside of McDavid and Draisaitl?

FWDs signed passed this year:

Lucic: No one is taking on that deal (4x $6M)
RNH: Probably their best trade chip but not sure how they upgrade on him by moving him. (2 x $6M)
Spooner: No one wanted him for free off waivers (1 x $3.1M)
Kassian: Overpaid but team may look at grit for playoffs (1x $2M)
Brodziak: Waiver wire type (1 x $1.15M)

Veteran FWD RFA/UFAs

Reider: Not much return for a guy with 0 goals
Rattie: Just cleared waivers
Khaira: Probably a guy they will try to re-sign for bottom 6
Chiasson: Perfect sell high candidate riding a high shooting percentage...they will probably re-sign him

Defense signed past this season:

Klefbom: Has value but like RNH unlikely they could move him for an upgrade (4 x $4.17)
Sekera: No sure anybody is taking him at 33 due to injury history / contract (2 x $5.5M)
Larsson: Tough to move since return won't be close to acquisition cost (2 x $4.17M)
Russell:Probably not getting much in return (2 x $4M)
Nurse: Likely has some value as physical d are always coveted (1 X $3.2M)
Manning: No team will take a guy that was a heathly scratch on Chicago and Edmonton now (1 x $2.25M)
Benning: Also a waiver fodder type (1 x $1.9M)

RFA/UFA

Petrovic: Maybe they get a 3rd or a 4th
Gravel: Maybe a 6th

Goalies:

Talbot: Appears to be refusing to waive his NTC
Koskinen: Just resigned at 3 x $4.5M after 27 games

Picks/Prospect:

Puljujarvi: Would be selling low on his potential
Yamamoto: Not having a great first pro season and a piece they should keep
Bouchard: Need to let him develop
2019 Picks: 1st, 2nd, Islanders 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th

Not like they have anything they can really move to make this team better in the short term without mortgaging more of the future picks/prospects.

Chiarelli took over a team with 2015 1st Overall (McDavid), 16th Overall (Barzal), 33rd Overall (Stephens but Aho taken 2 spots later), Hall, Eberle, RNH, Draisaitl, Yakupov, Klefbom, Schultz, etc and turned it into this dumpster fire. Honestly I still think that if they don't make the playoffs this season or next season that McDavids going to demand a trade and they will be starting from scratch again.

And that is what makes this so great. Oilers management is like a hydra. Lop one head off, and two more develop in its place.

How are they supposed to get anything done right when Katz, Nicholson, Lowe, MacTavish, Gretzky and fall guynew GM are all competing for the right to make decisions?

Simply unbelievable.

Friday night at Rogers Place, almost everywhere you looked, the Edmonton Oilers general manager appeared to be the resident genius.

We’re far enough into the season now to more than just suggest that Chiarelli may back to making most of the right moves again. The standings say he IS back.

We’re past the point, for example, where the new-coach-syndrome is a factor with the move to bring Hitchcock out of retirement.
hahahahaha

I assume Nicholson, the most overrated hockey executive in history, is going to be point on this presser?

I hope it's Lowe or MacTavish, just to totally crush the spirit of grease fans with the blunt reminder of the ever present fingers on the strings. In fact, I hope it's a joint presser with Lowe and MacTavish. Let it be that please.

Odds on anyone in the Edmonton media having the balls to ask why they let Chiarelli sign that horrific goalie contract? 10% chance I'd say.
