If true, this is terrible news. I wanted one more terrible trade and a Chiasson signing to further ruin the future.

I feel pretty confident attesting to the following:

Private Box and high market ticket renewals are due this year for the Oilers. They are not a hot ticket, and the return to joke status is heavily impacting oilers ticket pricing, resale value and perceived value around Edmonton/Alberta.

David Staples wrote opposing, nice propaganda pieces last year about the waning interest in the team, the cost of tickets and renewals. It is absolutely in the minds of management and media in town, even if they pay it precious little attention.

McDavid is represented by Bobby Orr's hockey agency, and while McDavid is personally handled by a partner agent, Bobby is the man. So when Bobby Orr shows up in town after a prolonged losing streak in which his star client and highest paid player in hockey looks worn out and lifeless, it's not a good look.

It's such a bad look I think it could only really be one of two options. Bobby Orr was telling Katz and Lowe that unless there are changes in management and the team finds his client some support, and some WINS, McDavid is done in Edmonton and will demand a trade in the offseason.

Like when he was drafted and the oilers decided to explode their management group in bring in one of the top GM candidates in the league. The oilers even paid a compensatory 2nd round draft pick to the Bruins for the hire. Why? Because Orr made it clear McDavid wasn't going to suffer through the same fate as other top rated drafted stars that preceded him.

It has been made clear this year to oilers management that they have a couple of months to turn this around, market off mcdavid for their renewals and generate some playoff revenue. If they fail to do this, McDavid is gone.

That's why the organization has been so erratic. That's why Hitch was brought in. That's why they are playing McDavid as much as he can withstand. They knew the situation going into this year, and Orr was in town to confirm it for them.

This absolutely reeks of a Lowe/Howson/MacT ouster. I'd bet you Howson was the one on the trade call that brought in Petrovic.

The vault is open right now, and there is rank desperation all over this situation. Time to consider trading with the oilers again.

Orr is going to play hardball for McDavid, as they share a common bond. Orr knows what it's like to be the best player in hockey. Orr took down the most powerful man in hockey in Alan Eagleson. This is personal for Orr. He'll make mincemeat out of the Oilers management. McDavid is as good as gone this summer.

Historical parallel: McDavid playing for the Oilers would be like if Guy Lafleur had played his career with the California Golden Seals.

Flash I’ve had the same gut feeling all year. I think the Oilers were desperate from day one and a big part of that may be McDavid telling them he’s not wasting anymore seasons in Edmonton.

He’s at a 1.28 PPG clip for his career and the guy will have made the playoffs in 1 out of his first 4 seasons, with no real sign of the team being able to improve anytime soon.

And really what do they do now? Not like they really have any expiring assets they can sell to get more picks, only real trade chips are McDavid, Drai, RNH, and Nurse, and prospect depth is pretty barren.

They almost have to just go all in to make the playoffs and salvage what they can from this season.

We should be careful what we wish for - this might actually make them better.
