An article In the Edmonton sun suggests the Oilers might want to look at Brian Elliot to split starts with Koskinen next year.

I still cant wipe the smile off my face after reading that one.

I'm beginning to think Monty Python's Funniest Joke in the World sketch might actually be prophetic of the Edmonton Oilers.

The cherry on top for me is that McDavid now knows that Koskinen in the guy that the Oilers have faith in to bring the team deep into the playoffs as he finishes the prime of his career.

He'll still be (no) good for a long time but elite scoring forwards do their biggest damage typically before their 25th birthday.

I cannot even begin to imagine the old bois club goig ahead with this without Collie McDoggie's acceptance.

So basically, McDavid has put all his eggs in the Koskinen basket as far as his career team success goes.

What? This statement is making my brain explode.

Except his performance and contract represent a 30 team NMC in and of themselves.

I guess at least now some of the salary could be buried in the minors.

From the ‘others’:

Quote:
I don’t need to see 40+ games of Kosko to know that of the 1000+ Oilers games I’ve watched this last decade he’s been the most impressive goalie we’ve had
...82 games in a season, plus a lockout. The Oil have made the playoffs once in the last decade. Nowhere near 1000+ games in a decade for them.

You did not account for watching replays from the 80's Oilers a few hundred times
For Oiler fans, this goes without saying

GG: You should sign Elliot, he won 10 in a row for me and tied a franchise record.

I also don't have all day here to explain to each and everyone my opinion on the matter. So the last thing I'm going to say is that there's a little bit too much overreaction in this thread in my opinion. This was not some kind of Ilya Bryzgalov albatross or some crazy long term Roberto Luongo type contract. It's a 3 year deal. Easy to stomach, easy to buy out. If he plays 50-60 games next season for them and at his current ability, then the deal will turn out fine. There's certainly a lot more glaring issues on this team than Miiko Koskinen.

I assume you've looked at the rest of the internet reaction to this, beyond CP? Because if you did, you'd see that this is widely hailed as an epic failure. But you keep doing you

Sign Bobrovsky or Varlamov to potential albatross contracts? Or sign Koskinen to a deal now. Who knows what those other 2 I just mentioned are going to get, so Koskinen's deal might actually end up looking great in comparison. IMO, contracts are all about supply and demand and leverage and unless we're actually in the business itself, we're just left to guess what we think is right.
On the bold: Sure. And that means a multi-year contract and a raise. But nearly doubling his salary? No, that does not follow. Especially since he essentially got this contract on the basis of a seven game home winning streak.

As for the second paragraph, the possibility that proven goaltenders may get overpaid does not make this signing of an unproven Koskinen a good deal. Your argument is basically the equivalent of saying that the contract we signed Troy Brouwer to was fine because the Oilers paid too much for Milan Lucic. The reality remains that both contracts were terrible.

Good lord.

Where was this guy in 2017 when Cam Talbot was carving out a Vezina quality season? He finished with a sparkling 42-22-8 record, 7 shutouts, a 2.39 GAA and a 0.919 SP.

Koskinen has nothing on what Cam Talbot has done.

I suppose, except that this was a new negotiation, so he didn't have to agree to any clause. Frankly, on the first contract, given his age and the fact that Koskinen was being persuaded to relocate continents, I'm not surprised he asked for a NMC to prevent being sent down.

But, yeah, at least they can bury some salary if it's necessary.

I don't know what the heck is going on up in Edmonton, except for one thing: Someone is left holding Chiarelli's beer.
