That Winterhawks program pumped out a lot of talent for a while there. Ryan Johansen, Seth Jones, Nino Niederreiter, Dumba, Bjorkstrand, Baertschi; I always thought Rattie was gonna be one of them to make some noise in the NHL too, along with Wotherspoon and Derek Pouliot.

I don't. Let Edmonton eat that cap hit.

The best part about Spooner being on waivers is that they traded Eberle pretty much solely for cap space.
Meanwhile, Eberle is going to be a UFA that they could have let walk this year for nothing, and now, when nobody picks up Spooner, they will have $2.2M of dead cap space sitting in the minors for their 2019-2020 roster.

Just so many egregious errors in handling cap space, talent evaluation, asset management, pro-scouting, amateur scouting, development, coaching. What a mess.

Whilst I take pleasure in watching The No goods Up North, there are a few short memories in here. Was it two seasons ago when everyone (maybe not everyone but you know what I mean) was clamouring to get Rattie off the Blues in a trade. I feel for the poor fella that he has had his career derailed by ending up in EDM, no one deserves that after they have seen how other teams do it right.

Sure. But that's no reason for us to waste a roster spot on a long shot experiment.

waiving those two and demoting Jones, it seems they are making space for someone. Add McDavids comments today ... I can feel it, a stupid trade is coming. Do your thing Chia, we believe in you.

Sekera is coming off LTIR so they needed the spot AND the cap space.

I don't understand why Edmonton all the sudden thinks they need to press panic button? Their play through the course of this year is exactly what everyone thought would happen. They're a below average team with a flattering record. The chances of them improving probably go down with every change they make.
But by all means, proceed with your fire drill.

Ty Rattie is the perfect minor league player, he's from Airdrie, so every bus trip is only 20mins door to door.

Not even two full seasons after Eberle was traded the return they got for him is essentially gone. They quickly dwindled the return down to a player who is currently on waivers and will very likely not give them anything in return.
Look at an example on the opposite end of the spectrum. One that is close to home.
Kent Nilsson. He was traded for a 2nd round pick that became Joe Nieuwendyk. We got 8 solid years out of Nieuwy. He was traded for Jarome Iginla and he did okay for us for a bit longer. Okay, Iggy was great for 16 years! The return we got for Iginla has essentially ended this chain (we still have Andrew Nielsen but like he's going to do anything or get us anything). We got over two decades of good performers after trading Nilsson.
1.5 years or 28-ish years? Yikes!

Trade trees are fun to follow — on the Sabres board they follow the ‘Rick Martin Trade Tree’ — it’s never ending. There’s still like ten good assets in the system that can be traced back to that trade in 1981.

Chia needs his long-term glasses back.. the guy is panicked. Win a game, no moves.. lose a couple of games, make panicked decisions. So awesome!

The Jordan Eberle-to-Ryan Spooner would be Steve Tambellini's biggest mistake, if he'd made it.
Ditto for Craig MacTavish.
I don't know if it cracks Peter Chiarelli's top three.
