Agreed.

I still believe a LHD is priority one and if he gets a F it will be a Kevin Hayes type.

Josh Anderson would be perfect. Bigger tougher version of Ferland who scores goals.

Add Hayes and Zucarello. Balance it out.

Schenn and Maroon would be perfect for this team.

Second line becomes a big, gritty, mean scoring line.

Third line becomes our shutdown line.

4th line is 3 big bodies who can grind and score.

Frolik, Czarnik, 1st, Kylington for Maroon and Schenn

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Schenn-Neal
Bennett-Backlund-Ryan
Maroon-Jankowski-Hathaway

I think that messes with team chemistry too much. Would be hard to take Maroon on too as if he had any value, I'd rather have frolik tbh, just a better player. I would deal 2019 1st+2020 2nd + Phillips/dube for schenn + 3rd or something though. Gotta leave Kylington out and pay a bit more to do it imo

I am starting to believe that one of the Flames D-men are on the table in terms of trade talk. If I had to guess I would say its Kyllington and Stone's name being thrown around.

Two words regarding parting with d-men before the playoffs:

Brendan Evans

IIRC - Sutter ran out of d-men one playoff and used Evans - he was on for one face off and then hopped right off as soon as the puck dropped. Never used again.

Also, It seems the Flames always loose a D-man or two in the playoffs.
Can never have enough NHL D-men for the playoffs. Don't trade any.

Our GM’s run out of NHL defense every playoff it seems.

Anders Eriksson had to come up from a full year in the AHL to step in.

Feaster played Cory Potter and Wotherspoon in playoff games. Etc..

This is a fair point. 8 NHL calibre D-men is a good problem to have. Knowing BT he is exploring every option right now, I can imagine that most of the fall out from this will happen before the draft.

I don't like tinkering with the top 9. They are just starting to mold into something.

However I wouldn't be opposed to perhaps and older vet who has something left in the tank for a playoff run who could slot in on the 4th line.

Acquisition cost is the key of course. But a guy whose best days are behind him, but still could score a huge goal for you, and play valuable minutes.

Kinda like Owen Nolan that one year. Though he did play a bigger role.

Honestly the Flames have such solid depth at all positions (except goal) I'd prefer they made no moves at the deadline.

- Deadline deals very rarely work out.

- The only moves that typically make sense is to load up on depth defensemen. However we will soon have 8 (9 if you count Prout) NHL caliber defencemen. Many are rookies but I feel like Anderson has solidified himself at this stage. Can rotate Valimaki/Kylington as required. Stone as a backup. And Prout as the emergency plan haha.

- Flames still have a couple NHL caliber forwards for added depth in the AHL as well. Quinne, Dube, Lazar, etc.

- Lets keep our picks and load up on some more prospects.

If the Flames traded for Zuccarello, I would actually do this with the forward lines:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Zuccarello (offensive line 1a)
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Neal (offensive line 1b)
Bennett - Backlund - Frolik (shut down)
Mangiapane/Czarnik/Hathaway - Jankowski - Ryan

When you configure the lines like that, I think the forwards are now just crazy good.

I also think doing nothing would be a good move. But if the Flames could get a forward like Zuccarello for a good price, I would consider it as well.

I just don’t understand why people actually propose breaking up the top line, makes zero sense to me. Augment the lower lines for sure, but don’t mess with the top line.

No way the top line gets messed with.

Zucc is a good player but honestly I like Frolik and the 3M line staying as is. And I'm starting to like Bennett, Neal & Janko on the third line. And we already have a whole wack of capable players of 4th line minutes.

I also think Czarnik or Ryan are capable in bumping up into that third line in case of injuries.

Breaking up the top line is a huge risk, but if the Flames were to acquire Zuccarello, I think the lines I proposed are the best way to use him to improve the team.

I think it allows the Flames to have a killer bottom 6 as well as a killer top 6. Bennett-Backlund-Frolik as a 3rd line is amazing and Ryan and Jankowski with whoever on the 4th line would make a very good 4th line.

If that were to happen, I'd prefer something like this:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm - Don't mess with the best line in hockey
Tkachuk - Jankowski - Zucarello
Bennett - Backlund - Neal
Hathaway - Ryan - Frolik

Neal and Zucarello could be swapped if they don't find chemistry... still not sure I like the addition or if it makes sense.

The best way to improve the 2nd best team in the entire NHL is to not mess with the top line.

Get a middle six forward and a goalie.

Still think a guy like Marcus Johansson is a sneaky good addition. He's just like Viktor Rask just a bit older. Fills the hole that Mangipane, Dube and Czarnik cannot seem to fill properly.

Then go after Anton Forsberg.

Really that's about all the tweaking you need to do and it addresses the Hole Smith will leave in the off season.

No major tweaking here.

Why does a second place team take an admittedly huge risk?

I feel like people are thinking this through. You don’t take huge risks at the top of the league, because you already have a great shot at the cup and that’s all anyone can ask for. The risk is that you hurt your shot at the cup, and if the risk is huge? You don’t take it, simple as that.

This is not a bubble team. People have to stop seeing them that way.
