McDavid, playing his first exhibition game, loved Rattie’s work.

“He carried his momentum from game 1 (Calgary pre-season). He was getting us the puck and getting into the right spot, credit to him,” said McDavid. “He knows offence and understands it. He gets the puck on his tape and it’s on and off it pretty quickly. That’s stuff you can’t teach, that killer instinct, even finding guys in stride, getting me the puck in the middle, in stride.”

For such a generational player, you'd think Connor would be a better judge of NHL talent.

After watching McDavid for the past few years, I really don't see "The best player in the world". To me, he's like a more skilled Pavel Bure. He has incredible talent, his ability to handle the puck at speed is amazing, he has terrific playmaking ability as well. But beyond that? At this point, he doesn't seem like much of a captain. He seems shy, and isn't playing in the trenches at both ends of the ice the way Crosby did/does. He doesn't seem angry about losing, just dejected.

When Crosby came into the league you could see that he had "it". There was greatness in the way he carried himself, he seemed like a leader pretty early on. He had a snarl to the way he played, he played hard at both ends of the ice... Maybe it is just my Calgary bias, but I'm starting to think McDavid isn't quite the generational player everyone is claiming he is. He has the talent, but to me, it doesn't seem like he has the character.

Off of the rush, because of his speed and ability to handle the puck at that speed, there is no equal.
All of aspects of McDavid's game are only good, not great. Couple that with playing a season worth of ice time in 50 games and no sign of help anywhere... it's seems obvious they have simply beat him into submission.
Though TC will not agree, the only thing that might save the Oilers is trading McDavid

I totally agree and have thought this since Day 1. I see more, "The best skilled player in the world."

Generational player to me means turning a guy like Conor Sheary into a 50 point guy. Or turning Chris "decent player" Kunitz into Chris "Olympic gold-medal winning" Kunitz. Mario Lemieux did this with a laundry list of players.

It also means not having a career-high 46.1 faceoff %. As a first-line center.

I see a guy, that when pushed hard doesn't push back (see exhibits: Hathaway and Backlund). He puts up points when it no longer matters and doesn't consistently find ways to use his (crappy) linemates.

There was probably a point when he was tracking to be a legit generational player, but poor development and a losing environment will likely place him in first-ballot HOF territory. Obviously a remarkable achievement should he get there, but still... it's kind of a shame.

In fairness, Chris Kunitz for example is way better than anything McD gets on a regular basis. I mean, Chaisson has 17 goals right now....................he's not a very good player.

I have to believe that their pro scouts are under the gun as well...i mean yes its Chia that pulls the trigger on deals but the input from the guys who watch players night in and night out is a huge part of the decisions made.

That whole staff is likely feeling a bit uncomfortable right now.

Players get traded away. That happens. Often you can follow the trade line and see where it dies. Sometimes it lasts a long time and sometimes it ends quickly.

Not even two full seasons after Eberle was traded the return they got for him is essentially gone. They quickly dwindled the return down to a player who is currently on waivers and will very likely not give them anything in return.

Look at an example on the opposite end of the spectrum. One that is close to home.
Kent Nilsson. He was traded for a 2nd round pick that became Joe Nieuwendyk. We got 8 solid years out of Nieuwy. He was traded for Jarome Iginla and he did okay for us for a bit longer. Okay, Iggy was great for 16 years! The return we got for Iginla has essentially ended this chain (we still have Andrew Nielsen but like he's going to do anything or get us anything). We got over two decades of good performers after trading Nilsson.

1.5 years or 28-ish years? Yikes!

Don't forget that there were two second rounders in the Nilsson trade. The other produced 1 season of Stephan Matteau and 5 seasons of Trent Yawney.
