Whether or not McDavid is the best player in the world, he's not as far ahead of the rest of the league as Gretzky was (excluding Mario). And Gretzky got traded for a return far inferior to a return of Barzal and Ekblad++ (and the Kings didn't have to take on a bad contract).
Carson and Gelinas were good players, and there were similar draft picks involved, but Barzal > Carson and Ekblad > Gelinas comparatively speaking IMO. Edmonton also had to add McSorley and Krushelnyski, which is a far sight different than the present Oilers "adding" Lucic. And, sure $15M but that had nothing to do with hockey.

mcdavid is NOT better than Crosby in any respect except handling at high speeds, that is it. The hype is more nauseating every year, I get that the NHL and related media need to sell him, he's their newest and brightest face for the league, but any fan that earnestly believes he's ACTUALLY the best player out there is a goof

Discuss it all you like, but in the end the answer is still the same.
Quote:
Is it individual success? Nope, he's fourth in the scoring race, behind Kucherov, Gaudreau, and Rantanen. Team success? Nope, the Oilers are soon to be passed by the Arizona Coyotes.
|
Individually, he has led the NHL in points the previous 2 seasons which have to be included, or the leading point getter every year is the best player in the world....which is a ridiculous way to measure something like that. Since he has entered the league he is easily the highest PPG player as well.
Quote:
McDavid has been hyped to oblivion to the point where even suggesting that he is individually fallible is somehow unacceptable. But McDavid isn't far-and-away the best at anything. He's not the best scorer, he's not the best two-way player, he's not the best at elevating his linemates (just ask Taylor Hall -- and then ask Conor Sheary).
|
Simply untrue. The NHL has never seen a player that skates and handles the puck at the same time like he does. Ever. As far as elevating teammates...really? He has Alex Chaisson on a 35 goal pace....his previous best is 13.
Quote:
He's phenomenal, yes, but this isn't a case of Crosby where he's always consistently better than all of his peers. McDavid is certainly a top-2/3 player, but it's nonsense to suggest that he's well ahead of anyone else, unless you're talking in terms of making money.
|
He has a bit to go to become a more complete player, which is to be fully expected from a 22 year old guy.
As for the hype and whatnot, I somewhat agree but the blame for that goes entirely on the team and the media. He has actually handled it well. They named him captain at 19...which was moronic in my eyes but he again handled it pretty well.
Yes he makes the most money...for a very good reason.

This part of your post is silly. Are you so sensitive that this will embarrass you?
Who cares what another fan base thinks of Cali's post? He at least gave some reasons.

What are we at on the season for his Total TOI? is he nearing 100 minutes more played than Gaudreau with less points yet, and comparable defensive play/responsibilities despite being a center? Barkov is the only forward with a higher average and Barkov actually kills penalties.
Edit: Rough Math is 1092 Minutes played for McDavid, Johnny is at 1018 Minutes with 2 more games played

McDavid could be and should be the best player in the world, but he is not. For me a key characteristic to being the best player would to make the players around you better. We haven't really seen that from McDavid outside of Draisaitl.
He could get there, but I doubt it will be with the Oilers. Not under their current team building philosophy anyway.

Elevating teammates is definately not a sure thing with McDavid. Draisaitl, sure. Chiasson, yes. But Rattie? Puljujärvi? Caggiula? There are lots of wingers who has simply not been touched by the magic. One thing that is also a stain om McDavids game is the fact that he is fairly often neutralized by physical play and teams zeroing in on him. He's been thrown off his game a lot, just like the better parts of the Flames game. Some players elevate their game when it gets tough, some disappear.

If McDavid played for the Flames, he'd probably have 100pts by now, given the kind of linemates and support he'd have.

From Spector's article today:
Quote:
Not only because the young Puljujarvi is unable to play an NHL game at anywhere close McDavid’s level, but because McDavid offered up one of his most mortal periods of the season. Perhaps a response to being made to baby sit an AHL player? Who knows.

Already playing down JP's value and lowering fan expectations. He's as good as gone.

Has their ever been an organization as terrible at drafting & developing as Edmonton? Just unreal.
Either you're a 1st round pick and tossed into the lineup or you're sent down to their affiliate to languish and given do or die call ups when the team is under the most pressure.

Man it would be great if Edmonton traded JP to the east and then that team traded him to us and we salvaged him. There's a good player in there and the Oilers are either going to wreck him or trade him for pennies on the dollar. Entertaining stuff. Feel kind of sorry for JP though.

Edmonton Oilers are no good, and thus by mere fact of being on the team McDavid is no good. Period!

Puljujarvi plays well last game. Starts tonight with McDavid and Nuge, which seems crazy after ONE good game. Entire team sucks. Puljujarvi back down to Cave and Lucic. This is the Oilers. It’s embarrassing. Absolutely pathetic.

I think it was a tweet from Randy Sportak -- PullRV has a bunch of points against Calgary but is garbage against everyone else. Luck might have something to do with it (I think he scored the goal last year that literally went through Gio's skate) but it's weird in any event...

Ignoring McDavid, RNH and Draisaitl (all of whom have contracts that mess things up anyway), and I guess goaltending, are there any Oilers that could even make Calgary's roster? Chiasson couldn't make it - the evidence shows that. I used to like Khaira as a bottom line player but he's regressed. I liked Reider on other teams but he's crap now. I like no defencemen, including Nurse. PullRV is terrible, "Yammy Hockey" looks like a guy who can excel in the AHL but not here. Brodziak I might have considered once upon a time but he's too old.

I’m getting the sense that the potential Florida-Oilers trade proposal I gave earlier was an over-pay by Florida. I can see that being true. I do think Barkov is an elite player. I just figure the oilers have to at least get the best player from the other team in this trade. I have included Lucic in my proposals because I figured the lure of getting McDavid would make teams willing to stomach having Lucic. That may have been an overstep on my part now that I think about it a little more. It’s basically a manager asking their owner if they are willing to think of it as just getting McDavid and paying him $18.5 million instead of paying him the $12.5 million that he is signed for. Which is a lot to ask of any owner.
So what if I adjusted the trade proposal to this:
To Florida:
McDavid
To Edmonton:
Barkov and Trochek
Top prospect
2 first round picks
Is that still an overpayment? Or is it an underpayment? The oilers get some cap relief in this deal but are essentially getting barkov for McDavid and a bunch of Magic Beans. Maybe replacing some of the picks/prospects with Trocheck makes it better for the oilers. I’m not sure.
I do think teams like Carolina and Florida are real good fits when it comes to buyers for McDavid when he inevitably asks for a trade.
