Rittich doesn’t give up the type of softies Smith does though, that’s the problem. Rittich also plays against the tougher opponents, so a comparison wouldn’t even be apt.
You’re correct though, winning is everything. But what happens if for whatever reason, Smith has to start in the playoffs and he’s facing the Scheifele’s and the Seguin’s and the Kucherov’s the world and they’re blasting pucks through his arms all day long.
There has to be some intellectual honesty and fact is, Smith has been one of the worst goaltenders in the league this year and is does not inspire much confidence with his play. To be fair, he’s playing better today and the last game, but to me, he has one month to prove he can stop giving up the softies before I’d ship him out.
