Oh man, I couldn't help myself but to go over and check out HF oil's response to this tweet! To be honest 50% of the posters are being pretty realistic but some of them are just unbelievable with the "let's give them 3-4 of our complete crap players and a top 10 protected 1st round pick for Tank". The poster Jet Walters takes the cake with this beaut!
Ideally I think we need a top 6 RW with some size/grit/scoring and a LW with some skill. If we are moving the 1st you'd think Ottawa would really want it with them not having one. We would need Stone to be extended and for the Sens to take back two of Benning/Spooner/Manning for it to work. Jaden Schwartz does make some sense too.
Benning, Spooner, Bear, 1st, conditional 2020 2nd for Stone (hopefully get Ottawa to retain a million or two.) .
Puljujarvi, Talbot, 2nd, for Schwartz
RNH McDavid Stone
Schwartz Drai Chiasson
Lucic Khaira Yamamoto
Rieder Brodziak Kassian
I love the "hopefully get Ottawa to retain a million or two".

If Edmonton had competent management the last thing that should be on the table is their 1st rounder. Hopped over to HF and they're all justifiably freaking out. Perfect encapsulation on how awful Katz is to that team, he should see that this is a disastrous path. You'd sell just as many suites in Edmonton promising rebuild 5.0 with a high level new prospect than getting smacked by us or WPG in the first round.

How about half a season of Panarin? He might be enough to get them into a wildcard spot.

I wonder if they are desperate enough to take a gamble at getting Matt Duchene in the hopes that he can help them get in the playoffs and to resign him in the summer to show season ticket holders they are super serious about winning this time.
Obviously, the Oilers cap situation and his impending free agency status is a huge roadblock, but I'm sure a rebuilding Ottawa would love to recoup some of the high picks and youth lost in the original Duchene trade.

McDavid and Draisatl eat most of their salary. I don't see it happening.

I think the reality is that they can't really add any one of consequence long-term because of their cap situation. They'd have to do something pretty drastic to do it, but it looks like things are getting desperate up there, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them ship out their future just to clear it up a bit.

Seeing them land Simmons or maybe Duchene for a package centered around their first will certainly bring a tear of joy to the eye of many flames fans.

Yeah, not only would the Oilers have to trade their 2019 first round pick to land an impact forward, but they'd likely have to include more assets to get the other team to also take on bad contracts just to make the cap work.
So if its Duchene, it'd be like:
1) Edm first round pick plus Poolparty plus B prospect for Duchene
and
2) Edm second round pick and Spooner for Ottawa taking that contract on.

RNH is the only player they have of any value with a big enough cap hit to offset an impact forward and their salary coming back. At that point they've basically just shuffled the deck chairs.

Edmonton should really push the chips in and go for it. If not now, when?

The best thing the Oilers could do is use that first round pick and more to get rid of Lucic.

It's nice to see the Ducks and Oilers sucking so bad...
Things would be perfect if only Vegas would join them.

That package wouldn't get Stone unextended, let alone extended.
If they want Stone Extended its the first, Poolparty and Bouchard. Basically two first round picks and a meh prospect.

I'll bet prospects within the Oilers' organization are clamouring to get out and are pleading with their agents.

This organization is the dumbest.
Here is what they are bad at:
1) trading - hall, eberle, strome
2) drafting - lol
3) developing - no one.
4) cap management - the worst
5) free agent signings - lucic, russel
6) contracts - lucic at 6, drai at 8, kassian at 2, lol so dumb.
7) team identity - big team of oafs for new Nhl
8) motivating players
9) player management - souray, nuge, comrie
This is what the oilers at good at:
1) convincing rfas to sign long contracts - lol @ mcdavid. Why 8 years bro?
2) making their players feel entitled
3) making money off their dumb fans

So... they are asking for Stone to be extended, THEN HAVE SALARY RETAINED IN A TRADE, as a condition of making the trade?
I don’t think that’s how GMing works.
