I think Neal will return to NHL form in the next month-ish based on how he's trending. Which is fine by me. Even a goal every third game would be a boost for the team.

I've come to accept without top line minutes and a second line type passer (AKA Tanguay type) he will not be scoring for us any time soon. Either get him a playmaker or do not expect much from him.

There is a trade deadline yet. IMO the absolute best move the team could make is acquiring a 2b type center that can pass.
And even sans moves, if they get the right plan/combination for PP2 there's no reason why Neal shouldn't be able to put up goals with a set play to tee him up if he can rediscover that shot of his.

He worked well with Perron, almost too bad we didn't have Versteeg on that third line right now and second powerplay
Your right, but his 5 on 5 isnt going to be solved with Jankowski and Bennetts style of play.

The thought of Mark Stone is drool worthy on this roster... I still hope we go out and try and get a guy like Schenn which helps with the 3 year window of Gaudreau but man would Stone be lethal in this line up.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Stone
Bennett - Jankowski - Neal
Hathaway - Ryan - Czarnik
Frolik
1st
3rd
Mangiapane
For
Stone as a rental who maybe you could manage to extend in the off season if we were able to make some further trades; keep Mike Stone and turn Brodie into a 10-20 1st rounder and prospect at the draft.

Simmonds to me is the new Mike Richards. Not off ice obviously but his game falling off a cliff.

How so? They essentially have the same stats this season. Ferland has played 12 more games, but also has more PP points.
What’s the “long way to go”?

If Tre goes after Wayne Simmonds I will be very upset. He's about 2 years past making an impact.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Seems like Treliving's blueprint for what he wants is out there. Consider his (alleged) sign/trade attempts from this past summer.
Wayne Simmonds (rumored to be part of the return if Hamilton went to Philly)
Ryan Reaves (we all recall their dinner together)
Pat Maroon (Duhatschek & Strickland reported the Flames were close here before getting the Neal deal done)

If Grabner was a rental sure. But don't think the Flames want the extra 2 seasons on his contract.

For me Brayden Schenn would be an ideal add.
Reasonable contract at 5.125.
Off year for him and his team, but had 70 points last year.
Can play Centre or wing.
Plays physical and is from Western Canada.
Would be a first+ I assume, but at least it's not a pure rental.

Very much my favourite target as well.
To CGY:
Schenn (1.625M retained, 3.5M cap-hit)
To STL:
2019 1st round pick (CGY)
2020 2nd round pick (CGY)
Would St. Louis move on something like that or near that? After the 19/20 season, our cap-structure could look fairly different as well with Brodie and Hamonic coming off the books (who knows what happens there).

Blues could be a one stop shop for the Flames. Gunnarsson or Bouwmeester for the bottom pair left shot D and Schenn would solve a lot of problems. Creates more cap crunch in the summer though. If we could get that retention on Schenn that would be huge.

I like this idea but add czarnik to the deal. This might help the blues adding depth speed and helps our cap next year. With schenn czarnik won't see the ice anyways

I feel if Gunnarsson or Bouw were to be included, it’d have to push the deal right into the Hamonic territory (1st + 2nd + 2nd), but who knows.
Straight across a 1st + a 2nd for 14 months of Schenn with a bit of retention seems like a fair price, but that does still leave a depth defenceman as a target. I wonder if the desire is to push Kylington and Valimaki out of the lineup so they get used as injury depth, or if we’re looking to acquire a veteran to sit on the sidelines until someone gets hurt.
I think with how the year has gone, Valimaki and Kylington deserve to be playing in the playoffs - assuming Valimaki gets healthy enough to split 6/7 duty with Kylington.

Watch the Sharks or Knights puck up Ferland at the deadline. A motivated Ferland.

I hate that it could easily happen. That would suck in the playoffs.

May not be a popular thought, but I wonder if Klyington might be an asset the Flames are willing to part with for the right player. Having 4 D under 22 playing NHL mins, is a luxury for sure.
Would Schenn for Kylington & Czarnik or a pick (not first) make sense?
Flames could head into the playoffs looking like:
Gaudreu-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuck-Schenn-Bennett/Neal
Frolik-Backlund-Bennett/Neal
Hathaway-Ryan-Jankowski/....
Gio-Brodie
Hanafin-Hamonic
Valamaki/LHD depth-Anderson

I just don't see the Flames moving a guy like Kylington, especially at this point in time.
Tre clearly liked his upside when he traded up to nab him in 2015. He's been developing well in the AHL since he was drafted and has improved each season.
He is finally pushing for full-time NHL duty and with the Valimaki injury we are already thin on the left side.
For me the players I don't want traded are: Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Hanifin, Gio, Hamonic, Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington, Dube, Backlund, Bennett, Jankowski and Rittich.
I think we really need to add another RHed shot forward that can play in our top 9 and think our most logical trade chips are Mangiapane and our 1st rounder. Some other minor moves may need to be made like a depth defenceman or backup goalie also but likely won't break the bank.
