Does that mean we can take a players contract worth that, or would his salary be pro-rated for the rest of the season?

Yeah but you can't add a quality player without removing someone from the roster. They don't have cap space.

Simmonds for a 2nd and Frolik (who I believe has little to no value) would make a lot of sense for both teams. Flyers get a player with only 1 year left and a pick, while the Flames get Simmons who will be off the books (doubt there would be room to sign after Tkachuk is done). Frolik is a bit of a salary dump as well, and is already disgruntled. I don't think Simmonds will go for a first as a rental.

I would guess the Flames will target a player with an expiring contract, they would have the space to make that work...

Luckily we have someone asking for it with a significant cap hit (allegedly).

Simmons is slow, declining, and I wouldnt want to pay near the acquisition cost for him. A line with him and Neal on the wings would just get skated circles around.

I agree with Flash. Go all in this season. The Division is ripe for the picking. The Flames typically play San Jose well and Anaheim is on an off year.
Lock up first in the conference so they can play the last Wild Card team and let Vegas and San Jose beat each other up.
Add 2nd line Right winger and veteran Bottom pairing Dman. If you can you add an experienced back up.
Simmonds, Edmundson and McIllheny.

philly fans can't wait for his departure, dumb penalties and apparently forgot how to pass or to even take a pass.
Unless Neal's going back forget him

I keep seeing Edmundson being brought up, but he's a 25 year old pending RFA, 20 minute per night defensive Dman. If STL was going to move a LHD, you'd think Gunnarsson would be the one.

I keep saying it, but I'm hoping for one more youngish core forward with term (or an extension) to be brought in. Preferably a center. I think a move like that puts this team in a really good position for the next 3 seasons at least.
ROR, Duchene, Stone, Schenn.
I'm not huge on Russians, but I think Tarasenko will absolutely catch fire given a change of scenery.
I'm also keen on a few others on a lesser scale, like Johansson, Silfverberg and Toffoli.

Schenn would be the best one. Signed for a few more years. Would likely cost the most. Not sure if we could put together a package that would get him.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Schenn would be a terrific ad and would help the centres slot where they should (Backlund down to 3C) but yeah that would cost too much to get and throw a wrench into next year's cap.

Pay a little more to get a lot more.

That is exactly why the Flames need to keep their 1st. They have already made their move, and by and large it has paid off. Not drafting until the 3rd round for two years in a row is not a recipe for success. The cupboards are bare, there is not much left in the AHL in terms of NHL talent. Successful NHL teams are built on the back of ELC contracts.
You're right the Flames have had success because of trading picks, but keeping their success for the future needs good drafting.

If that's all it takes to get Duchene, get it done already and get to work on an extension.

But the year the Flames went "all in" to win a Stanley Cup was the second straight year they had won the Division and registered +100 points, their third straight top-five finish, and only three years removed from a Stanley Cup Finals appearance in which they were beaten by a hot goaltender. This year's Flames are not there yet.
The team you are talking about was the 2017–18 TB Lightning, which built methodically over the past five years, and were a Cup finalist in 2015. They spent a massive number of futures for a couple of pieces to go for it, and this year looks like a good bet for them to cash-in on that wager. The Flames still require smaller supplementation and more internal growth. It will come, but we are probably still another two years away.

You'd have to think the Sens bringing in Stone from us would at least kind of help with signing his brother. Couldn't hurt but for what the Sens paid for Duchene its going to take a hell of a lot more. Think one of our 3 defence prospects and a first just to start.

Of the list. Duchene (Doubtful), Nyquist and Johansson are really the only Fw's I want the Flames to trade for. And Still Nik Kronwall. I know he's old and used up but there's another run left in the old man. Would take a bunch of pressure off of Gio and Hammer the deeper you go into the playoffs.

I do agree, as it looks like the teams in at least our division are regressing, which will give us a very good path over the next few years for our window.

We are not picking up anyone that is going to require a $7M+ extension imo.
If the Flames can send back salary in a deal where they land Schenn that could work but they will need to move Frolik, Stone, and a cap hit like Brodie before free agency starts.
