Flash Walken never said anything about this being the last chance to make a run. He suggested they go all in, and he's certainly not wrong.
The Flames have a deep forward group, one of the best blue lines in the NHL. Stars at all positions with Rittich emerging as a legitimate number one goalie, this is a year you go for it. Get another forward, get a capable back up and go for it. That doesn't suggest the window is closed after this year, that doesn't suggest it's one and day.. but if you have a great team and a legitimate shot, go for the damn cup.
They're close so push for it. Sitting back because there might be opportunity down the road is foolish. If they have a good team two years from now, three years from now they can make a push then too.

The Flames should absolutely push for this season. Best season in 30 years, all of our key positions except for #1 D are young so that limits the amount of pressure we need from players drafted in the first few rounds over the next 1-3 years.
You go all in this year, hopefully for players that will be around for longer than 4 months. The Flames are at that “how do we get over the top” phase of things.

It’s really only 2 years as a work stoppage is guaranteed.

I think the flames need to add an experienced depth forward like Eric Staal and an another experienced Defencemen like Kronwall and possibly a goalie.

No reason to go all in. As others have said, we have 2 or 3 years with the current core.
Wouldn't mind a goalie though

The most recent talk has been that the NHL and NHLPA are both looking at avoiding a work stoppage.

I think
(a) the window is open now, but also just opened.
(b) I am also wondering what "all in" means. I think there should always be flexibility. The Oilers lost theirs with Lucic and some other salaries. The Flames have a burdensome contract in Neal, a big one coming in Tkachuk (plus Brodie and Hamonic soon thereafter) and if "all in" means a long term signing of a goalie at a high price, that would remove the last vestiges of flexibility. If you go that route you better be right.

I agree that the Flames are in a great position to add pieces at the deadline for a run, but am also opposed to trading away a first round pick to do so. That is not “going all in” in my mind. That is a pragmatic but conservative wager.

Taking a while to get to 5000

The biggest concern would be disrupting the chemistry in the room, with any move. That being said, some agents are already working to disrupt the chemistry so really, it seems to be coming regardless. May as well try to squeeze in more talent if thats the case.
Get a goalie, get that depth D, add a scoring winger. This is the core for several more years until its blown up for picks, so may as well get all you can from it and that means adding where and when you can.

Silly season is starting.
NO trading futures for RENTALS
It rarely works.
Trading futures to bolster the current line up for multiple seasons I'm ok with.

Calgary will be looking to augment an already good roster. There is a hole on the second line wing and back up goalie but they don't need to be hunting star players. Ideally those two holes should be filled and Treliving has mentioned a left side D, so that's three.
There are plenty of pieces in the system already, going all in won't mortgage the future.
Marcus Johansson on the wing, Curtis McElhinney in goal and a depth player on the backend won't cripple this team or limit us a year from now. Hate making fan trades but players/prospects like Austin Czarnik, Spencer Foo, Matthew Phillips should easily be in play. The first two don't have much value but if you flip one of them with Mike Smith you should be able to swap back ups with a bad team. Phillips has been hot lately, a small late round pick, he could have decent value for several teams. Johansson's value is tough to gauge due to his health and the wackiness that is deadline season.
Don't like making fan trades though so the last part of this post is random spit balling. But the Flames should be going for it. Period.

When considering going "all in" I think the rest of the NHL has to be one of the factors to look at. Sure, the core is young and has a few more cap friendly years, but will the rest of the West / NHL be as "weak" going forward?
The Flames have played well against the best of the west - NSH, WPG, SJS. Will LA, AD, and others be as ripe for picking as they are this year?
And what of the east? I think the Flames can go toe-to-toe with those favorites in a 6-7 game series. Would you be surprised to see any team other than TB, BOS, or WSH in the SCF?
I think this is a year to go for it. Flames players having career years coupled with weak competition. And I have no issues with rentals or coughing up any draft pick to do it.
with our luck:
2019 - Bobrovsky unhappy on his team. 2020 - he signs with STL, EDM, or LA
2019 - simmonds plays in the east. 2020 - he signs with VGK, AD, or DAL
2019 - AD, LA, STL all on a seemingly downward spiral. 2020 - all 3 have a "surprise" year al'a VCR.

I would be willing to move 2 first rounders this year to acquire the right top tier players.
The flames have a 90 point player on an elc playing with two guys on a ~40 point pace.
Time to upgrade to ensure home ice advantage and at least a third round appearance.

I'd be willing to straight up move the 1st for the right deal.*
I'd also be willing to move the first on a lesser deal if a 2nd round pick was coming back to us.
*To be fair the only deal that IMO is the right deal is a deal that see's us send the 1st+ get Mark Stone with enough expendable $ going to Ottawa to make an extension work.

This is very much the kind of “going for it” we can and should be doing. No big splash, but low key solid pieces to solidify some areas of weakness. I’d be ecstatic if we acquire guys like the ones you mentioned.
I think, certainly, you need to give the Flames the best chance to win it all this year that you can, without doing any damage for the next handful of years. That means no 1st rounders, no top prospects, no big shakeups, just do what you can without those things. If that’s just a backup and a 7th D, go for it. If you can get a middle six RW, great.
Conservative plays are the right ones. We’re in an amazing spot, a little tinkering might push us into Tampa range.

Great post.
It's a buyer's market for top tier talent this year. Time to cash in some picks for players.
If you've spent the last few years thinking the team is great and just missing coaching or whatever then you probably don't see how rare this is. If you've thought the depth was an organizational strength, you probably don't see the weakness in flames bottom 6 scoring. If you've thought the flames top offensive players have been elite for years, you probably don't see the difference between Monahan on a 70 point pace and a 100 point pace.
But the reality is this team hasn't been close to this good in 30 freaking years. Clear the cobwebs here and decide whether a once in a 30 year season is worth gambling on, or whether it's better to draft 25th overall at the end of June.

2 first rounders would cripple this team. The Flames are already out of prospects. They need to draft for sustainable success. All the Best teams consistently draft well. How often does a cap deadline acquisition actually work?

I don’t see Treliving giving up the assets to acquire him but how extraordinary would a line winged by Simmonds and Tkachuk be? Particularly in the playoffs.
I think Treliving should focus (and he most likely already is) on acquiring a capable and competent backup goaltender for the playoffs. I can’t imagine, nor do I want to, a scenario where Rittich is injured and Smith has to fill in.
