Thumbs down Lethbridge Police Officer Kills Injured Deer By Driving Over It Multiple Times

I won’t post the video as I’m sure the story is disturbing enough.

Quote:
A cellphone video of a Lethbridge, Alta., police officer repeatedly running over an injured deer has emotions running high, with calls for criminal charges, reports of death threats against the officer and a flood of complaints to government agencies.

In the video, published by Global News, an on-duty officer is seen using a police truck to drive over the deer multiple times in south Lethbridge, trying to kill it for nearly 15 minutes. The animal eventually died.
Quote:
"It's very apparent from the video that the deer was experiencing horrific pain and suffering. You can hear the deer shrieking and screaming and crying out."

Couldn't he shoot it, or call Fish & Wildlife?

Saw the video on the news...

Yeah...thats just dumb...

Shoot the thing and put it out of its misery...

I have a friend who lives in the country and keeps a buck knife in his car for that exact purpose.

If you cant shoot it at least cut the throat so it dies quickly.

Read another article that the person filming it had to turn up their radio in their car to drown out the screams and cries from the deer

So disturbing...

This idiot cop was just trying to avoid the paperwork from using his gun

No question he should have used his firearm. I imagine he thought the vehicle would kill it quickly. Pretty dumb, you aren’t hitting it with speed so you’re just crushing it.

Or, he just made a mistake. Perhaps his dispatcher said don’t shoot it. What if the bullet somehow ricocheted and hit someone.

I hope he does not lose his job.

I hope he does lose his job. A police officer should use better judgement.

From experience, I lived in a small town and came across an injured deer in a street. I walked to the fish cop’s house and informed him and within minutes the deer was put down. Pretty simple process.

Pretty dumb move, but I believe the cop was just trying to put the animal out of its misery but he didn't know what to do. I don't believe (hope?) the cop wasn't acting maliciously or getting any joy out of causing the animal to suffer. Maybe some discipline and better training for this guy but I also don't think he should lose his job for it.

I don't know the cops back story, seems pretty obvious to anyone who grew up and has dealt with this sort of thing before. Any hunting experience or growing up in a rural area seems to make it obvious, but I can see how someone at that moment unsure of how to deal with a suffering animal would maybe come to the conclusion to run it over in an attempt to kill it. First attempt failed and just went downhill from there.

You can't have people making that decision being police officers. It's idiotic and represents a greater threat in general. It's so far from a logical step to take I would absolutely fear for the next decision he or she would make.

On the news this evening they said SOP is to use a firearm, usually their shotgun, after getting the ok from a supervisor.

I think it is pretty safe to say this was just a lack in judgement. The officer probably thought he was doing the right thing but obviously it did not go as planned. In hindsight Proper procedure should be call a Wildlife officer and let them deal with it.

Hopefully in light of this incident people can agree on a protocol in these situations. This will get totally blown out of proportion.

Mistake? Sure, but he also had time to think about what to do with the deer.
I really have a hard time believing the dispatcher gave the instructions not to shoot it but instead run it over.

There’s ways to make sure the bullet doesn’t ricochet, especially when you’re able to shoot it point blank. Cops have this kind of training

I've never gone through police training. Nor have I ever encountered an injured deer or any animal in distress. But this is quite literally the last thing I'd ever do.

Not the best way of going about putting the deer out of its misery, but shouldn't lose his job over it.

I mean, I guess it could be worse if he drug the deer behind his Cruiser. I agree with you this cop shouldn't have a gun and a badge based on this kind of decision making
