Considering how effective (and lucrative) the IG marketing ecosystem is, this is literally of 0 surprise.
Traditional advertising is absolute garbage on ROI compared to IG and YouTube plugs.

The whole influencer economy has a swath of issues around transparent advertising, but having the shopping public trying to spin their consumer spending into a some form of pseudo "professional development" runs into Black Mirror territory in my opinion.
It's one thing to lease a BMW to convince the world you're killing at your multi-level marketing scheme, it's quite another to suggest you're sponsored by BMW or that you have connections with businesses that you don't.
I particularly worry about young consumers racking up tons of debt in the pursuit of having content to post under the gist of "Eventually some one will pay me for this..." when it's clear the influencer market is getting hyper saturated.

I usually agree with that sentiment. But when I look at some of the ‘parents’ out there, the whirlwind of media and social factors, I can’t help but feel bad for an 18yo who would fall into that trap. Some of these people may seriously have never been given the chance to know what they see on a screen isn’t reality.
I’m not even that far removed from it, but I can’t imagine what the average youth is up against in this world of constantly public everything.
Keeping up with Joneses isn’t just for the middle aged middle class anymore. Perception really is reality for some of these poor children.

Go into the cryptocurrency thread. This isn't exclusive to influencers.

I always figured this thread should be for eye rolling news stories, not super depressing ones.
So here’s a good one. Apparently the Borg, yes the Star Trek villains, are now too offensive for Canadians.
Quote:
Troller is an avid fan of the "Star Trek" TV franchise and in 2015 got the plate which features a well-known saying by the alien race the Borg. He put the ASIMIL8 plate in a border that stated:, "We are the Borg" and "Resistance is futile."
In a recently filed legal brief, Troller explained that he drove around with the plate for nearly two years and no one complained. He renewed it with MPI in 2016 without issue.
|
Quote:
The communications show the plate was cancelled not after a formal complaint but when a social media post was spotted by a government employee.
|
Quote:
Even after he heard Troller’s explanation that it was a Star Trek reference and not meant as an offensive message about Indigenous people, Keith said it made no difference.
“Even with the rationale he provided, the meaning is the exact same regardless of what race — human or alien — it applies to.

^^^ Doesn’t seem to show the vehicle he was going to put it on. I think if it was some car decked out to look like a Borg cube or had dozens of Star Trek bumper stickers it might be okay.

It did note that he had a plate frame with two common Borg phrases on it.

Yeah, I guess my only thing is that the plate frame would probably be too nuanced for somebody who isn't a Trekkie.

On the one hand, a neutral government regulatory entity shouldn't be picking winners and losers when it comes to political ideology anyway. That's not their role, and the position that assimilation or USA-style "melting pot" immigration strategy is the better policy than a cultural mosaic is a legitimate political position, whether we agree with it or not.
On the other hand, refusing to grant someone a license plate that says what they want on it is perfectly within the agency's power. You're effectively plastering your preferred plate wording over an official Manitoba trademark, and Manitoba doesn't want its brand associated with things that are going to upset people, even if the people getting upset are hopelessly, incorrigably stupid.

It’s not even so much that Manitoba didn’t want a plate to say assimilate. Given their indigenous population it’s not totally unreasonable.
What made me laugh was the moron Keith at MPI who
a) demanded a full review of all custom license plates in the entire ####ing province over one plate that wasn’t even obviously offensive
b) vowed to severely punish the employees who approved the plate despite the fact they did all necessary due diligence to determine the plate was ok and
c) even after he was told it was a Star Trek reference didn’t just say what any non-moron would say (regardless of the intention it’s questionable enough in other context to be removed) and instead doubles down on the stupid by flat out stating that assimilate is an inherently offensive term even when referring to a fictional alien race and therefore isn’t appropriate in any context.

So, not really the specific story in this case - but holy the people who elected to comment on it must be insufferable in real life. It's like an "eat the rich" convention.
