I'm sure it has already been mentioned, but in the last 10 seasons combined, Edmonton's record is 290 wins, 371 losses and 86 overtime losses. The only season they have been above .500, in that 10 season span, is in 2016-17 (47-26-9)

I guess it's funny since that was the punchline of the joke in the first place.

In their entire 39 season history in the NHL they have been at or below .500 19 times, missed the playoff 17 times, Thier franchise no goodness has wiped away their successes.

This is fun:

In 2003 the Oilers finished ahead of the Flames in the Standings and played in the playoffs. Since that year...

2003–04: Flames (playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2005–06: Flames (playoffs) > Oilers (playoffs)
2006–07: Flames (playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2007–08: Flames (playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2008–09: Flames (playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2009–10: Flames (no playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2010–11: Flames (no playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2011–12: Flames (no playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2012–13: Oilers (no playoffs) > Flames (no playoffs) *lockout-shortened season
2013–14: Flames (no playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2014–15: Flames (playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2015–16: Flames (no playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2016–17: Oilers (playoffs) > Flames (playoffs)
2017–18: Flames (no playoffs) > Oilers (no playoffs)
2018–19: Flames > Oilers

That's fourteen seasons in which the Oilers have only played in the NHL playoffs twice. That is fifteen seasons in which the Oilers have only twice placed above the Flames, and one of those was a 48-game schedule. In the past sixteen years the Oilers have never played in the NHL playoffs in the same season that the Flames have missed, but the Flames have done it five times, and will likely do it a sixth time this year.

Edmonton is not good.

Chiadenfreude

-Goalies were ****... forwards were ****... defense was ****... team is ****.
Well balanced team across the board

-Hitchcock isn’t playing this team to its strengths.
Of course, I don’t think anyone knows what those are

-###### Chiarelli, ###### MacT, ###### Kevin Lowe and last but not least, ###### Daryl Katz.

-Don't forget Nicholson and Howson

-Random fact: Lucic now has same # of goals as Kassian, Rattie,JJ and spooner lol

-He also makes as much as those players combined

-Time for a players-only closed-door meeting. Except half the team remains in the room and the door is permanently locked.

-I feel like a lot of AHL teams would absolutely destroy the Oilers without McD

-The good news: Lucic probably doubled his trade value the last two games.
The bad news: The doubling of zero is still zero

I got this idea from someone on CP (likely this thread) but it's beautiful and worth re-hashing for the benefit of everyone who runs across Oilers fans on a daily basis.

My favourite opening comment to said Oiler fan is, "Man...you must be pretty stoked about the Oilers this year?!?!"

To which they normally raise an eyebrow and question back, "But they're on a huge losing streak and getting killed on a nightly basis and currently out of a playoff spot".

Me: "Ya, I know all that. But have you seen their roster? They are totally over-achieving!!"

LOL!

Remember in preseason when the oilers needed overtime and goals from lucic, rattie, rieder and strome to beat the Cologne Sharks? They could have have been a very competitive team in the German Elete League this year.

Thanks for the list and the reminder of how good this bet has been for me. We started with $5 and doubled every year, until it turned into lunch and drinks. I wonder how many more I can sucker him out of?

I was able to line up a few $100 bets in the pre-season. Looking forward to cashing in... one guy won't even make eye contact at the office now.

I'm well aware of this. I make a bet with my Oilers friend every year which team will finish with more points and I've only lost once.

Edmonton is not good.
I’ve posted the stats before, so I’ll just summarize quickly - but since 1990, when they last won the cup, they have only been in the top 40% of the teams in the league ONE TIME (16-17), They have been in the top 10 teams overall ONE TIME (16-17).

Their SECOND BEST season since 1990 was a season in which they placed 12th out of 30 teams. Their THIRD BEST season since 1990 is a season in which they placed 14th out of 30 teams. Only twice more have they been above the median line (in both cases they were 15th out of 30 teams).

In the 90s, they made the playoffs some years because there was fewer teams. They finished 11th overall one season early in the 90s, but in a 21 team league, that’s the median team, not above median.

Never believe that they have only been rebuilding since 2006 - stats show they have been mostly awful for nearly 3 decades now. Those fans that thought that last season was the outlier - well, sorry to say, it was the season prior that was the outlier.

Some ammo for when Oilers fans try use McDavid envy in a conversation or even worse when they think it's a no brainer that the flames would trade both Gaudreau and Monahan for McD:

Gaudreau @ 6.75M = 26G 38A 64P = 9.5 Points/Million Salary

McDavid @ 12.5M = 24G 39A 63P = 5.0 Points/Million Salary

But here is the kicker:

Monahan + Gaudreau @ 13.125 = 49G 69A 118P = 9 Points/Million Salary

Not to mention McDavid gets considerable more ice time than either of the flames.
