Sounds like a hell of an idea, Bob. Your team is going to be in rebuild mode after this season so this idea makes a whole lot of sense.

The Edmonton media are so desperate to make the 2019 playoffs that they are willing to give up a 1st round pick for help this year. Crazy talk.
Propaganda minister Stauffer has forgotten the salary cap. Sure, get a top 6, but pay them with what exactly? Legit top 6 makes $5 mill plus on an existing contract and probably over $6 million on a new deal.

And those pesky NMCs!

The Oilers have a lots of issues up and down their lineup, most of all being no depth. But if they somehow managed to add a player like Tarasenko and put him on McDavid's wing, that's a duo that would admittedly be scary.

Thankfully, Chia doesn't have the trading prowess to pull that off.

They don't have the cap space, nor do they have the asset to get anything that will help them out.

He's floating the idea on behalf of management. To see if the fans believe it's worth mortgaging for the future.

IMO the Edmonton Oilers must be exhaustive in their efforts to improve scoring depth up front and should be prepared to move their 2019 #1 if neccessary to acquire a legit top 6 FWD...with term...

Rumours are Katz wants the Oilers in the playoffs this year no matter what. I think we start seeing some young pieces and picks being moved to get a wild card spot.

He doesn’t have the prowess to pull off trading a 1st for Dustin Brown.

If true, I just do not understand his logic. Has he not learned that, no matter:

-how much he himself meddles in hockey operations
-how often his key henchmen KLown and MacT meddle in hockey operations and/or belittle Oiler fans
-how poorly his management and scouts botch drafts
-how many trades his GM loses
-how many homer-media outlets express blind loyalty, only to turn on a dime and call for the organization to burn itself down, top-to-bottom (and then turn back to blind infatuation, like a lovesick jilted ex)
-how terribly his team plays
-how many jerseys are thrown on Rexall Jr's home ice surface
-how many fans rail against being "tiered"

...Oilers fans will continue to:

-buy tickets at exorbitant prices
-buy tickets for the "privilege" to watch games from the concourse/lake of urine just outside the arena/special "Coiler-Courtyard" viewing venue
-purchase new jerseys to replace those that have been thrown in previous seasons
-renew their seasons' tickets
-pressure municipal leaders to give the team whatever it wants, lest it make good on threats to leave town
-connect their very beings to the nineteen hundred and eighties in the vain hopes that one day, ONE day, those days of glory will return

...and, as such, he is untouchable?!?

Why bother to make the playoffs this year when Oiler fans will be right back next year, bleating about their teams obvious greatness, shilling out otherwise useful coin on all things Oiler?

If anything, Katz should just keep the same course at this point, let the bad contracts expire and then try to see if they can make something of a team featuring "mid-20s Connor".

Unlike the salivating Oiler fan lining up at the counter in anticipation of the Bobby-Nick-Double-Cheese burger release, I just don't buy it.

...unless, much like his franchise itself, Katz's logic is...

NG!

probably linked to the luxury box renewal iirc.... this would not be good year for Edmonton's typical tank...

thing is, the only thing of real value is their picks... I mean there's a few good players like maybe Bouchard and... ok maybe just Bouchard...

I want them to make the playoffs too. It would be nice to have an easy first round opponent for us.

My fav comment:

Lucic, klefbom 1st & 2nd for Tarasenko & Parayko

lol good luck with that

More like Lucic (50% retained) Klefbom, 2019 first 2019, second, Bouchard, Puljujärvi.

Say what you want about his analytics, but Kris Russell is such a pain the neck to play against. He's a gamer.

I'm glad he hit a contract home run with another team.

I want these idiots to be buyers prior to the trade deadline and completely gut what little they have for a prospect pool and maybe trade that first round draft pick.

A sexy move to make a Wildcard spot by the skin of their teeth? Great plan.

Then what, you get eliminated (very possibly by the Flames), then next year your new top 6 winger acclimatizes to the country club culture permeating the team and they slide back to a 10th/11th place club again except then you have no assets to deal except the one or two left that you desperately need. McDavid loses more patience and you're a step closer to needing to blow it up for rebuild 4 (5/6?).

I think the Flames being second in the league is putting extra pressure on them to not appear as far behind as they are.

spend the first rounder and still miss the playoffs would be ideal...although it looks like fogging a mirror is all that is required to make the playoffs in the west this season
