RNH - McDavid - Draisaitl
Hall - Barzal - Eberle

If they draft Connor, it's:

RNH - McDavid - Connor
Hall - Draisaitl - Eberle

Either way, it's as good of a top 6 as any in the league. All they had to do was nothing.
Don't kid yourself, the Oilers had to move Hall. The recent Ference comments are confirmation on all the stories and twitter pictures.

The issue isn't trading Hall, it's what they got in return.

Going back to what they had before would borderline be an insult.

The Oilers need to clean out all the nepotism beneficiaries in their management, full stop. After that they need to hire a legit Preaident of Hockey Ops that is well respected from an NHL team to start hiring his own people. Stan Bownan, Ken Holland, Lou lamerilllo, Steve Yzerman, hell even Burke (some of the guys are unavailable I'm just outlining the type of person I would target. Someone with pedigree that had a track record of building a winner. They've thrown enough money at useless people not to throw money at someone hyper competent. You can build a winner in Edmonton, while the flames were struggling 1995-2004 the Oilers were icing playoff teams on a shoestring budget facing the same issues we were, but they were owned be EIG who look like geniuses now. The new POHO hires an up and coming GM like BT was and gets trained on the job. Try to sell McDavud on a rebuild done right with someone who knows what they're doing, if he's not down then trade him.

Maybe I'm in the minority on this but laughing at the Oilers has gotten old. That first game of the year was so fun and competitive I wish it could be like that every year with two teams high in the standings, it's never happened in my lifetime. Maybe the unhinged mega fans on hf are arrogant but all the Oiler buddies I have are good dudes that laugh at the team just as much as me. Katz is sewering that franchise.
It has gotten as old as their ignorant fan base.

As long as their fan base continues to personify that their 80’s privledge breeds their entitled glory... they can continue to wander in the desert until the end of time.

Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton were all in a bidding war for Lucic at the time. Let's not reinvent history.

We "lost" the bidding war and signed Brouwer as a callback position.

We were better, but weren't much better than Edmonton during that same free agent stretch.

So as we were getting ready for hockey a buddy and I were talking after the last Smith poor performance and I commented how I don't think Smith will play in the NHL after this year because he just doesn't have it anymore.

A third guy, an Oiler fan, chimed in that Talbot will be without a job quicker than Smith because he just isn't an NHL calibre goalie. I told him that Smith is hurting a good team with his weak goals that even beer league goalie should stop. The Oiler fan said that Talbot is the sole reason the Oilers arent ahead of the Flames, well that and luck on the Flames part. I commented that the Flames have a deeper roster but he quickly balked at that. I knew I wasn't getting through his thick skull so I stopped. The other Flame fan just looked at him and says "Seriously?" and the Oiler fan told him that he isn't disillusioned like most Flames fans...

Oil fans are no good.

I don't think signing Lucic was the problem, it's the term, cost and conditions that make it a horrible deal.
And, yes, Calgary has had it's share of horrible RFA signings too. That can not be disputed, but this thread is about E=NG.

So the Oiler fan admits that he's still "illusioned" with his team?

As long as Lowe is with the team in ANY capacity the Oilers are blackballed. And Stauffer knows it.
The best part (well one of the best parts) about the Oilers is that since the Smyth trade in 2007 when the rest of the players & agents fully & completely realized what a malignant troll Kevin Lowe is... the entire fan base & organization have morphed players disgust with management’s operating style into a perceived self deprecating problem with the city/climate/geography.

It’s not Lowe and company humping everything that Sather taught them...

They are infallible.

“It must be the dressing room. Let’s renovate it!! State of the art!!”

Remember that.

“Ok... it’s not the dressing room... it must be the City... well, we’ll just have to pay players more.”

Ok!! Sounds good to us!

Now it isn’t that the place doesn’t have its geographic challenges.

But this has really created a perfect storm for non-Oiler fans.

Because they feel they need to over compensate players to be in a S-Hole like Ed’Mutton, they over pay them.

Draisaitl, the 6x6 club, Souray, Russel etc...

By proxy, in a cap era... the over payment of a player limits their value in a trade.

The price the Flames paid for Hamonic was part his ability & part the value of his contract.

This never registers with Oiler fans who fail to comprehend the math required for cap management.

This value is non-existent in Edmonton’s contracts. Another thing they fail to consider in their fantasy based trade proposals for their overvalued players.

Except of course in the case of Taylor Hall who was underpaid & traded in a deal that seemed to ignore the value of his contract by Chiapet.

The self deprecation is now so fully entrenched in the psyche of fans/management that even if Lowe stopped receiving a paycheque from the franchise... it would most likely persist.

Even when they look at a competent cold climate team like Winnipeg, they chalk it up to as what Mac-T & Lowe referenced in their 2013 press conference of clowns as luck, or the “cyclical” nature of the business, or the “price” of their success in the 80’s.

Sure.

It couldn’t possibly be that they’re groupthinking boneheads who infected and continue to infect the organization with a culture of entitled ineptitude that will take decades to flush with continual treatment even after a full and complete diagnosis of the problem.

One of the few parts of Oil Change I remember seeing was Tambellini with a #### eating grin bragging about how Belanger wanted three years instead of two because he ‘wanted to be a part of what they were building and where they were going’ and saw it as validation of the process.

They literally gave a 33 year old, bottom 6 journeyman looking to cash in on his last NHL deal an extra year in the cap era because he blew smoke up their ass. Sums up the Katz, Lowe and OBC era pretty well I think.

This kind of crap is pure gold. It explains why they continue to sell tickets. Their fans continue to give the organization a pass & use a few players as a scapegoat.

Crazy looking at the standings and seeing that even with how bad the Oilers have been they are only 2 points out of the playoffs. There are really only 6-7 good teams in the West this year and that final spot is up for grabs.

It must be infuriating for Oilers fans to know that if their GM was of average competence and had built some resemblance of an NHL roster around McDavid they would be a shoo-in for the playoffs.

No one in the league wanted to touch Khabibhulin and his bad back, but the Oilers gave him a 5 year deal. See Lucic, Milan, for the latest example of a player happily taking the Oilers money. Players get sold hard by Lowe over the years, and against all data and gossip about the farce the organization is, some still fall for the sales job only to regret it months later (Pronger, Perron, Cole, Souray, etc), Though some know that they can make millions of dollars no other team will ever give them.

There is definitely a good chance the Oilers screw those picks up but considering the players available their franchise could have been set for a decade with McDavid, Chabot, Aho
I know it’s all revisionist history for Oiler fans. Somehow ignoring the fact that another team developed the final product of the player. It’s like the rumoured Comrie for Perry & a 1st Lowe rejected in autumn of 2003.

It looks bad in hindsight until you remember that you’re not getting 2007 Corey Perry developed by the Ducks. You would receive a 2003 Corey Perry ready to be pumped full of glory at the Oilers bottomless fueling station of manifest destiny. That Corey Perry would have went the way of his former teammate
Robbie Schremp.

It’s not about excellence. It is about loyalty. Like any successful oligarchy the Edmonton Oilers are founded on commitment to the brand above every other consideration.

The problem with the Eberle trade is that he made too much money. If he had a $4 or even a $5 million dollar contract they would have received a greater return.

It’s a similar situation for RNH & Draisatl. If a team like the Oilers overvalue their players they are going to realize two things.

1. The Market doesn’t lie. It is what determines the player’s value.
2. If you’re the Oilers it’s going to be really hard to trade with the Oilers.
