Yuck? You're off base. Those two guys aren't slow. They arent the fastest, but they aren't slow out there either.
The Flames dont need someone like Brian Boyle. They need someone who can take a regular shift and deter the after the whistle nonsense by Getzlaf, Byuflein, Kane, Dumba et al in the playoffs. Maroon and Simmonds fit the bill with what we need.

Wasn't James Neal supposed to bring that deterrence?
I'd rather just beat them up on the scoreboard and bring in as much talent as possible. Besides, if they really need to beat up Getzlaf, they still have guys like Bennett, Tkachuk, and Hathaway taking regular shifts. Plus Neal, if he ever gets his act together.
Pat Maroon has 3 goals this year, and I really wasn't impressed by Simmonds today.

No. James Neal was supposed to bring scoring and veteran leadership in the playoffs. He has never been billed as a physical deterrent.

I mean, sure, but what does Simmonds bring, then? Because James Neal has quite a reputation of being a player with a physical presence. He had 113 hits for Nashville a couple years ago. I was under the impression he'd be far more engaged than he's looked so far.

Simmonds brings a guy who can put the puck in the net who is on an expiring contract. He'll be highly motivated to have a big finish to his season to set up a huge payday. He's 30 if I recall correctly. He's also known to have a reputation of being one of the toughest players in the entire NHL. Because he can play a regular shift, he'll be able to go nose to nose with Kesler, or Byuflein, etc on a more regular basis. Plus he knows what his role is (cough cough Prout cough). Simmonds will likely have a higher acquisition cost.
Maroon is also on an expiring contract. He's shown he can produce when played up the lineup. Maroon needs a big finish to the season to keep his NHL career. He isn't as fearsome as Simmonds but will be smart enough to know why he's in the lineup. He's cheap and won't cost much to acquire. He's a lesser option to Simmonds but may be more easily obtained.

If we could get Jordan Eberle for a decent price and he got back to his scoring ways would make all the Oiler fans heads Explode lol

Great post.
Like mentioned I would rather give up a 3rd for Maroon then a first and top prospect for Simmonds. Maroon is also good on the powerplay, which could help with our 2nd unit.

F no to maroon or Simmonds. More plug wingers is the last thing this team needs.
2nd line centre, 6LD, back up goalie. Those are the needs. Even better if this 2nd line c is someone with jam (like schenn)
Stone is great but theres np way we could keep him beyond this season.

If we could get Schenn without losing a valuable roster player this team would be absolute dynamite. I would give up a first plus eatbread plus another small piece without blinking.
Imagine : Tkachuk-Schenn-Bennett
That line would be hell to play agaisnt.

A 3rd for a bottom 6 winger? No way. Cant see Maroon costing that much anyways after his terrible season so far.
Save the picks for the draft or bigger need.

One, I'm pretty sure Treliving's going to exercise a little more patience. He's going to want to see if Neal can turn it up for us in the playoffs first, regardless of how poorly he's doing this season. If he's a dud there as well, then I see Treliving maybe exploring trading him. And that's still a maybe IMO.
And two, who in the league would want him? I'm not willing to give up assets for someone to take him off our hands.
So for better or worse, I'm pretty confident we're stuck with him for now.
Frolik on the other hand, I see gone by either the trade deadline, or during the offseason. I can't foresee Frolik with the Flames by next season.
|
Hit the nail on the head.
Little to no chance Neal is dealt anytime soon.
I think Frolik will be moved this offseason. He is a valuable top 6-9 player that will be needed come playoff time. That kind of depth is going to be critical.
As far as trade chips go, I wonder if Czarnik might be dangled. He just hasn't been able to carve out a consistent spot in the lineup & there were many teams interested in him. I could see a scenario where he's sent somewhere for that LH D the Flames are rumoured to be pursuing.

I think Czarnik is a really good trading chip that doesn’t impact the team in the short or long term at all especially with the emergence of Phillips in the AHL over the last dozen or so games. Package Czarnik with another player with term like Frolik along with a first and a high end prospect like Dube and we are able to give a competitive package that could land another big impact player into the top 6. It’s an intriguing thought when you already think about how crazy good this team is at scoring goals.. adding a player like Duchene could give this team a dynamic that will be almost impossible to defend especially considering that adding a player like that likely gives us a third line that would rival a good amount of teams 2nd line.

To be fair, he’s more of a throw-in than a good trade chip. He hasn’t produced nor shown anything really at the NHL level. You’d really have to find the right trade partner to squeeze anything more that a 4th out of them.

That package had better get you something more than a rental.

Where did I say Duchene is a rental? If we are going for Duchene it’s with the intention of locking him up long term to be part of the core.
Also Czarnik was coveted by 24 teams this off season, I’m sure he is still high on many teams lists who feel like they could offer him a better opportunity

Absolutely. Look at Boston’s forward lineup, they had no problem letting him go.
