He was never that good. I don't get where this notion of him being a top goaltender ever came from. He had one really good season and the rest all average to below average at best. Now he's old, slow and clearly losing all of his reactionary ability that he relied upon to cover up his numerous flaws.

He is now completely unplayable imo.

Disagree. There really isn't any pressure. The team is sitting pretty in the standings and is scoring at will. The starter's injury is reportedly minor. The backup looks like a Bantam goalie. All he has to do is not look as bad as Smith, which he should be able to do if he maintains any sort of proper goalie positioning.

Now is a good time to start him, we play a bunch of eastern teams and if we are going to lose some games those are the ones to lose.

What other options are there? I have no idea.
Smith doesn’t even have to play IMO. Just let him get healthy in practice and mentor the young guys down there.

Behind a team that outplays the other team almost every night? I’d hope not...

Exactly. We aren’t after Vezina candidates.

Behind this team we only need a backup that is ok.

Game Takes:
Bruins 6 Flames 4

- Flames give up only 8 high danger chances in 60 minutes (all situations)
- 60 minute no quit effort
- Smith questionable on 2/3 of 5 against
- Lindholm his 20th
- Gaudreau keeps rolling

We need Grant Fuhr!

Maybe someone should bring in some blow for Smith in between periods.

Just stick a shooter tutor in net, and I guarantee it would make more saves than Smith.

See, this is the kind of stuff that is just not needed. He's a goalie that's struggling, that's it. It's a game. He's not a terrible person. No need to kick a guy when he's down.

A comment on Smith acting as a mentor or a coach. Do you really want a guy with the bad habits he does trying to coach those into other players? Calgary has bad enough goaltending coaching, I'm not sure we want someone who has such poor fundamentals teaching the next crop how to play the position.

That really shows that should have been a win for the Flames.

I'm with ya man, but we've been told we know nothing of what he does and criticism is not warranted, ever.

Hmmmm....Im gonna go with a hot take in that maybe it is the players?

I mean....how many are even still in the NHL?

Goaltending is such a crapshoot anymore. It's impossible to blame a G coach when a guy falls off the face of the earth like Smith and others before him because it happens a lot all over the place.

So then it's all on the GM for continually picking up these over the hill retirees-in-training. Gotcha.

Impossible to blame goaltending coach for bad goaltending. That's definitely a hot take.

I think Rittich is an anomaly to the coaching of Sigalet. Every other goalie we've had under him has been average to mediocre.

It's probably time to switch things up with the goalie coaching. Look at how much better the team is under Peters than Gulutzan.
