It was a cap dump we traded a 3rd round pick for a goalie with over 5 years of being a legit number 1 and he had greater than a .910 save % in 4 of the 5 years prior.
In my opinion the Flames got Smith at a discount and not an overpay. Having said that the fact they missed the playoffs cost the team a 3rd as opposed to the 2nd it would have cost had they qualified.
Definitely agree Treliving needs to try and improve this position this season if possible. I do wonder if the Flames and Oilers would do a Smith-Talbot swap? If the Flames take back Jake Allen’s contract could that lower the price on Schenn?
We traded a 2014 3rd rounder who also had some value.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Other than chia's history of poor trades, is there any reason the oilers would do a talbot for smith swap? I honestly don't see anyone taking Smith unless an asset is added.
I am very interested in getting Lehner. I was hoping for him shortly after his article in the Players Tribune. It's hard to overstate how much mental health can change a person.
As for actually acquiring him, it's almost a detriment that he's doing so well. It all boils down to who they want long term - Lehner or Griess. At this point, Lehner is sure making a great case to stick around.
The wild card is that they have a dynamite young goalie named Ilya Sorokin who is lighting up the KHL. They have stated that they want him to come over to the NHL when his contract is up, and it appears that he is eager to do so. It'll be interesting to see what they decide to do.
With that said, if the Isles decide they are set with Lehner, is Griess perhaps an option for the Flames to consider?
I don't think the Oilers are too interested in helping the Flames possibly solve their goalie problem. If he were an option it would probably have to be via three way trade.
Obviously the Oil wouldn't be, any more than the Flames want to solve their immediate cap problems if Sekera returns to the lineup. Needs sometimes make strange bed fellows.
Better than Smith at this point. He was better in his starts last year too. Not by much. But he was. He would have been a smart signing in the off season but he's not anywhere right now.

I still don't think they would do it though unless the Flames wanted to badly overpay where you have to consider it. Chiarelli already has a ton of hate from Oiler fans. If he were to trade Talbot to the Flames for not much and things work out and the Flames go deep it would make it even worse for him.
How long is Crawford out? The knock on him his health but I think he is probably available at the right price and IMO a better goalie than everyone on your list besides Bobrovsky who I think CBJ keeps for this season.
I really like the Lehner option TBH. That is found money for a retooling Islanders team on a 1 year deal, so I’m sure they would be happy to have assets back for him. They had no expectations for him after his poor performance and mental health issues, but he seems to be NHL caliber again. I’ve watched a handful of his minutes and he looks really sharp. So good in fact that he could be a viable starter should Rittich falter (not that he will, but contingency plans are a good idea).
Other than that, McHardtospell is probably the best option, but I think the Hurricanes would be reticent to be rid of their de facto starter unless they are well out of the playoff hunt.
The Islanders are one of 9 teams fighting for 8 playoff spots in their conference. They are red hot (8-2) , and based on winning percentage, they are currently in a playoff spot.
Lehner has established himself as their #1 goalie, and is playing the best hockey of his career.
The Islanders have zero reason to move him, he's more likely to be extended. Teams like to make the playoffs.
Teams need 2 goalies these days, and unless the Islanders fall badly out of the race (which is unlikely as there are so few contenders for the playoff spots in the East), they will hang on to both.
Also... I wonder if Tyler Parsons occupies any real-estate in Tre's mind at this point
We've seen the potential he has, and I'll bet most of us feel the rough ECHL and AHL stats are more indicative of rough start than signs of his potential - but he's really just getting this year's season started with his return from injury.
2-0 since coming back (but then pulled Dec 31st after giving up 6...)
Dec 22 W 5-1: 0.969 (31SV on 32SH)
Dec 29 W 3-2: 0.951 (39SV on 41SH)
Dec 31 L 6-5: 0.806 (25V on 31SH) (Pulled for Gillies)
A little awkward...
I don't know where I'd stand on it... but does Parsons and Gillies factor into these decisions at this point? And if so... in what way?
One would hope that he isn't burning time on the bench, and he hasn't done much recently to instill confidence as a NHL 1B... but are the guys that drafted him high enough on him that they just need to see him turning the corner in the AHL to know it's worth a shot here?

The word I have heard is that Crawford might be done permanently.

For myself who is a Knights season ticket holder there is zero doubt in my mind Tyler Parsons will be a top end #1 goalie down the road. Injuries have set him back though so he will need some time in the minors yet.

I think you have to have watched a lot of Knights to feel as confident as I am with Parsons stepping into a huge role, but that's exactly why I even float that out there.
What is enough time in the minors, and how much weight did they put on what he has done since the draft vs. what he did before?
Given the current scenario... would they even try it, or are they looking for him to prove a year of production with Stockton before he's tried as an option to help here?

You can't try him now. He isn't ready. He hasn't even put together a consistent enough string of games at lower levels.
