Or, Pat knows he is likely to be replaced shortly.
You don't host a show like over time if you're prone to blowing up a team's goaltender on Twitter.

Smith has 12 wins for us this season. He's 12-9-1. He's now our backup, not starter. If our backup was Gilles or Parsons and they had a 12-9-1 record, I think we'd all be fairly happy.
Backups lose games, that's why they're backups. Anyone remember all of Kipper's backups? Every game they played i expected a loss. It was a pleasant surprise if they won one for us. I would have been ecstatic if McElhinney or McLennan or Toskala had a 12-9-1 record.
Smith is a backup now. Backups lose their fair share of games. We're playing on the second of a back-to-back against a very good Bruins team and almost won. I'm pretty happy with the effort. Hopefully Rittich comes back soon. All this crapping on Smith is nauseating. He sucks, accept it, move on.

There is nothing to suggest that the Flames need to accept mediocrity in any position, much less back up goalie.

I’m not calling him out as person. I said he was a clown and loser on the ice. He’s has history of calling our teammates, as floated from team to team, and can’t ever win. Tell me where I’m wrong. Actually don’t bother, I don’t care.

Agreed. Personal attacks are beyond pathetic and as a fan base that makes me ashamed. No denying he has been awful on the ice but from all accounts he is a great human being, a fantastic teammate and a good person. As a fan base we are better than that.

It's obvious that people here still have high expectations for this guy, because somewhere in people's minds they still see him as a starter. Everyone will absolutely deny the fact that he's a starter and yet point to his starter-level salary etc. and criticize him for it.
Look. I've given up on Smith a few months ago. Thankfully Rittich has stepped up in that time. But the fact is, Smith has stolen a couple of games for us. The Nashville shutout and the Minnesota games come to mind. For a backup goalie to steal us a few games is good enough for me.
Change your expectations on Smith. He looks a lot better when/if you actually see him as a backup.
|
Smith is a terrible backup...nobody thinks/expects he's a starter

time to start looking for a capable backup...

Yes, but the risk is that if he keeps putting him and doesn’t hold him accountable, he’ll lose the respect of the dressing room. The team is probably livid at Smith and annoyed at Peters.

If Dave isn't able to go next game, you start Gillies. Enough is enough with the Mike Smith great goal giveaway!! How many more points are you going to let go putting Smith in net? I was done with this guy two months ago, get him the f out of there!!!

It's rare but it has happened.
I still think that BT likely has a couple offers he is sitting on from whomever (Flyers is my guess for Lyon) but simply doesn't like the acquisition cost. Tonight probably forces him to revisit things.
Something has to give though, BT is patient but he isn't dumb.

I think the other possibility is that Treliving is not absolutely 100% sure who he needs, a backup or a starter. I think if/when Treliving is 100% convinced Rittich is the future he pulls the trigger on a backup.
Otherwise you wait on grabbing legit starter?
I dunno

You went too far. Call out his play not the person.

If not for a third game in four nights, I would. But I think the schedule makes this decision for the Flames.

Fair enough, and I'm all for getting a new backup. In fact I think it's Tre's #1 priority, ahead of getting a 2C and left-side defenseman.
All I'm saying is people constantly hammering Smith is getting old. But I completely understand if people wont shut up about it until he's traded. It's too bad that it's such a sticking point on what's otherwise been an unreal season for us.

Where are all of these reports of Mike Smith being a great teammate? He’s thrown players on his team under the bus in Tampa, Dallas, Phoenix, and I think he even did it a few times here.
And even if he is a great teammate (none of us really know), that’s not what we are paying him for. Smith has done nothing for this franchise. We owe him
Nothing.

Actually IIRC smith was a whiny baby early in the season and basically threw his d men under the bus and never took responsibility for his bad play up until the Montreal game and only after that had broken his spirit did he start taking responsibility.
I’m not attacking him but don’t claim smith wasn’t denying responsibility which was a reason many fans turned on him in the first place.

The 5th goal though, woof. That might be one of the worst all year.

It doesn't matter how many insane saves you made, you can't let in two softies and expect to win. It doesn't balance out like that.

Ugh... Some of them were tough goals, but eventually you just have to make a save.
