3 games in 4 nights. Road game against the Bruins. You can't expect a better effort given the circumstances. This is why people make a lot of negative posts about Smith. It's literally not acceptable for the Flames, if it was a non-playoff team then yeah maybe you don't want to spend assets to acquire a competent backup. But the Flames are in contender mode and you don't just piss away free points on a consistent basis. Gotta figure something out soon.

We knew he was bound to blow another one. I’m not even upset, the rest of the team was impressive as usual.

I still expect the Flames to go 9-2 this month. Plenty of rest at the end of the next 9 games. If Rittich is healthy you run with him

I just don't understand how some can continue to defend Smith. He's done. I really wish we had some other option. At this point if Rittich is still out next game, I think you have to go with Gillies. Sigh

I'd seriously take any backup with a save percentage over .900 at this point. The extra 1-2 leaky goals a game is crippling. This season is easily Hiller playing himself out of the league bad for Smith and we'd be in big trouble if not for Rittich's apparent breakout year. (I still shudder at the thought of the year we had to rely on Hiller when the game had passed him by, so at least we don't have to play Smith quite that much.)

I'd take Hiller over this.

Smith isn't good enough to be the backup...add this one to the list of games Smith has blown for the team

Yes I was, because they were blaming every single goal on Mike Smith. Not every goal was his fault. But certain key ones were, like the 1st one and especially the 5th one. And at the end of the day, his track record combined with those two awful goals are enough to warrant significant managerial action.

Hell of an effort, Smith played like a clown again, and Neal giving this team zilch. Gaudreau is unbelievable.

It’s a tough situation. He’s respected veteran but he’s done. He cannot even make the simplest stop look simple anymore. He fights every puck that come his way. You MUST move on at some point. The man is not an NHL player anymore.

There's legitimately one guy in the way of the flames being great. And it sucks cause you don't want to pin it on a guy who's invested like that but it's check mate for father time on Smith's career

I was patient about Smith but at this point, I simply could not imagine putting him in net for a playoff game. They’re going to have to find a backup.

I can get behind what we saw in Detroit, but when there's games like this I believe less and less that we stand a good chance to win games with Smith in net.

Either Gillies is far more terrible than any of us can imagine, or they really need to come to terms with the fact that we may not see a serviceable backup in him before the year is up. This game made sense for a Gillies start, and hindsight makes the Smith start looking silly.

In either case, I'm not sure what ceiling there is that we're throwing these games away for.

There's no question this game was on Smith. Their lackluster start to the game led to the loss in the end, but that's only when you consider that surging back for 4 wasn't enough to make up for a poor result in net.
