Benny vs. Kane is going to be awesome.
I hope this has the sharks all out of sorts skating around trying to get revenge and forgetting theres a hockey game to play.
After watching a few more highlights I think the best part of the hit is that Bennett actually lowers himself at the last second to ensure he doesn't contact the head and he doesn't leave his feet. It is so textbook that even if it was .1 or .2 seconds late, I don't think it mattered to the league.

Just watching the Winter Classic on the NHL channel and the commentataors just brought up the Calgary / SJ game...
McGuire called it 'shenanigans', and both giggled, then talked about Feb 7th like it will be a huge deal.
This kind of stuff happens daily with divisional games - why is it that very time a Flame throws a hit, it's league-wide news?

Hopefully Kane is over confident and under estimates Bennett and gets KTFO!

Oh yes, Kane at the very least essentially signed himself up for it in his post game comments, which I’m sure he did on purpose. Will just be a matter of weather Bennett obliges and I can’t imagine he won’t.

Bennett’s not a goon that carries things over, and gets sent out by the coach to chase guys around. If anything, he plays his game and the other team gets their panties in a bunch.
Bennett hit Simek and answered with a little tussle with Goodrow
Just because Kane was a bigmouth after the game, why would anyone think Bennett has an issue with him?
|
Kane is suggesting Bennett was tougher because he (Kane) was gone.
I anticipate Kane will be the first (unless Dillon does) to try to “settle the (perceived) score” with Bennett.
If either happens, I’m comfortable Bennett will hold his own.

Yeah, this is getting blown out of proportion. Kane is trying to do Kane things and stir the pot against a rival after a loss - whatever. Bennett has nothing to answer to.

Doug Wilson not happy about lack of suspension on Sam Bennett. His chief complaint is that referee, Dan O’Halloran, issued a match penalty for intent to injure, and DOPS “decided to disagree with the official’s call.”

Does Doug Wilson also have an issue that referee Dan O'Halloran gave Goodrow an instigator but the league decided to go against that?

In the guess Kane is serious, nothing good is going to come from it if he is focusing on chasing Flames players instead of the game. That didn't work too well for them on Monday.

I have no issue with any complaints from doug Wilson, he is probably still fuming about that sarich hit on Marleau in the playoffs from years ago.

This is classic NHL.
Refusal to enforce their own rules. Referees shown to be incompetent or untrustworthy. Zero public facing accountability. Players conditioned to play a certain way until a media storm develops and the league has to make an example if someone ultimately to rescind their ruling once the heat dies down.
Great game, garbage league.

Did he like when Dan O’Hallaran shoved Bennett while his tag team partner Dell punched him in the face?

Breaking news: O'Hallaran made a bad call.
In other news, water is wet.

Nobody thinks that Bennett has an issue with Kane. It's Kane that has an issue with Bennett blowing up one of his teammates immediately after Kane was ejected from the game.
Kane will likely challenge Bennett on Feb 7th, and I doubt that Bennett will decline.

Don't know where to post this - this thread is as good as any.
On NHL Network, they are discussing the top teams and what they need. With respect to the Flames, obviously they talked goaltending. And one guy says Smith fits the Flames because he is gritty, and that is their identity.
It is amazing how long perceptions can persist, long after they are applicable. How can any professional hockey analyst think the Flames identity is grit?

Or when the Flames went after Korolyuk for his hotdog empty net goal in 2004. I remember Wilson was reported to have smashed things in the SJ management box at the Dome.

Because the last 2 times they noticed the Flames were when Sutter was around and they were gritty, and the Hartley surprise year when they were tenacious
Lots of forgettable years in between, except when Brent beat the hell out of a garbage can.

I think the team is grittier than we give them credit for.
Bennett and Tkachuk are certainly the leaders of the bunch. Most teams have a Hathaway on the 4th line. Gio and Hamonic on the backend don't instigate much but can certainly respond. Neal hasn't done too much this year but certainly has a gritty/dirty reputation.
But they play larger than their size and rise to the occasions. The Flames have performed best in these nasty games, partly because while the Bennetts and Tkachuks are raising some dirt, the others are making the opponents pay.
So while I agree it's obviously not a full roster of gritty players, I think the team gets itself into many gritty games and performs well as a result.
