Yes. I believe it was a 2nd rounder? It wasnt a Top 3 pick so they werent going to do anything useful with it anyways.

That just makes the hiring even funnier.

The silliest thing is that the Oilers basically went public with the playoffs or bust notion, which translates to Chia fix this and get into the playoffs or you're toast.
They suddenly put Chia into a public position of desperation and other GM's aren't going to be sympathetic.
As well, I'm betting that the direction from on high is that McDavid and Draisiatil and RNH are cornerstones and not to be traded leaving Chia with precious little that other teams are interested in.
On top of that he's got a coach who came in all shiny and rattled off wins and is probably the organizations new golden boy.
I'm sure he's dictating to his Team Canada buddies Lowe and Bobby Burger about what he wants.

If you would like a refresher on their level of arrogance...

And the craziest of all:

I’ve really seen a transformation with this team ever since the Jets game. Our PP and PK look miles better, nobody is coasting, everyone is buying into the game. We aren’t relying on McDavid to do everything. Lucic looks faster, the emergence of some depth like Chiasson, Reider, Caggiula, even Kassian, and much better play from our defence and of course Cambot being sexy. Not to mention Koskinen put in a great game against Nashville, even though having a goalie that’s number 19 bugs the #### out of me.

And this has been the point of a lot of my posts.
Theres nothing there.
They need their picks despite the fact that they are horrendous at picking. They cant really deal anyone like Sekera, Russel or Lucic without sweetening the take and they have nothing left to sweeten it with.
They cant just get rid of these guys and really go for broke unless, again as Resolute astutely pointed out, they get some sweet, sweet, CBA compliance buyouts (read: Get Out of Cap Jail Free cards), the rest of their players are dime-a-dozen replacement-level players that every team hosts a plethora of, so they have no value and the team has no cap space so they cant even dip into much of a UFA market.
And even more, they're considered a horror-show of a destination so they'd be hard-pressed to even go for some off-the-board KHL or Euro guys other than the truly desperate.

I have my doubts that there will be compliance buyouts in the next CBA.
I expect that the CBA will be extended.

If the CBA extension is the direction, I would have thought the Olympics would have occurred last year.

Here's the difference between their lineup vs the Ducks in the 2017 playoffs compared to tonight. Can you uncover the problem? Sure they have some injuries, but if they had some depth and some prospects coming on two years later they wouldn't be in such a mess. They're equal or a downgrade at nearly every slot. They've had all this time to improve the roster...
2017 line
Tonight's line
Maroon_______McDavid__________Caggiula
Draisaitl(+)____McDavid(=)_______Kassian(-)
Lucic_________Draisaitl__________Slepyshev
Lucic(=)______Nugent-Hopkins(-)__PuljuJarvi(=)
Pouliot________Nugent-Hopkins____Eberle
Reider(-)______Khaira(-)_________Spooner(-)
Desharnais_____Letestu__________Kassian
Gambardella(-)_Brodziak(=)_______Rattie(=)
Klefbom____Larsson
Nurse(-)____Petrovic(-)
Russell_____Benning
Jones(-)____Larsson(+)
Nurse______Gryba
Manning(-)__Benning(-)
Talbot
Koskinen(=)
Brossoit
Talbot(+)
The only line improvements are:
1. Draisaitl to top line is an improvement on Maroon but you've had to do so because you didn't replace Maroon and Draisaitl can't handle his own line
2. Larsson over Benning on D2 is an improvement but it's only an accounting measure because you've put Petrovic in Larsson's slot on D1???
3. Talbot over Brossoit at G2 is debateable as Brossoit has played well and Talbot hasn't

With 2/3 improvements are shuffling player positions, and the other is an 0.892 goalie, your team is f###ed.

the only things I think I'd nitpick are the two "='s" bolded above
-2017 Lucic is better than 2019 Lucic - despite Chiarelli claming he is at least 40% faster or whatever poppycock he spouted
-2017 Talbot was much better than Koskinen IMO - maybe the stats say differently but Talbot was in god mode that year and dragged that team into the playoffs

I know but that’s a whole other conversation because then you get into McDavid/Draisaitl/Nurse are better than their 2017 version debates.

Yeah Talbot in 2017 was 4th in Vezina voting. As much as McDavid is carrying the team this year, he carried them to the playoffs in that year.

The minimum requirement to "carry" a team should at least be paired with some measure of success. McDavid has the franchise heading to yet another non-playoff year. Despite the fact he's on an island, which is not his fault, he's not carrying anything. He's succeeding despite the mess.

If the Oilers had good pieces and Chia was in the same trouble, There would be a GM gold rush to the phones to take advantage.

Fair enough. McDavid couldn't carry Talbot's jock strap that year. It was all Talbot all the time.

It was a 52nd overall pick in 2017, Oshawa General captain Jack Studnicka, who is currently tied for 5th in points for Team Canada in the World Juniors. This will be another one that hurts for the Oilers in a few years.
