Happy to hear no suspension, I thought he was going to get a couple of games, but that's because I thought the hit was late. Clearly they've looked at it and determined it wasn't, or at least it was barely late and not worth suspension.
Listened to the comments from DeBoer and Kane. The DeBoer comments don't bother me, I thought he was pretty balanced, and when asked very specifically about the hit, he described it accurately. Bennett went out looking for an opportunity to send a message make a physical impact (likely because he was pissed about the slash and the previous shift where the Sharks went after our players in a scrum), so describing it as predatory is accurate. But as we have now seen, predatory doesn't make it illegal. I had way more issue (although think it's super entertaining) with Kane's comments around the Flames playing tougher once he left the game....................yes Kane, Bennett seems like the type to be intimidated, and also you left the game 20 seconds earlier, give me a break.
I'm still torn on the timing of the hit. Legal or not, I don't know I want to see players potentially injured in decided games as they are letting the clock run out(my take would be different if this was a playoff series and these teams were going at it again in two days in a best of 7). But I also agree with the posters that say this is what the Flames have been missing the past few years. The Sharks can play victim all they want, they were all over our best players and started a scrum and went after Chucky the shift before............. Bennett went out and responded and as we know now, did so in an impactfull fashion within the rules.............hard to not like what that means for the team.
Next game is going to be nuts between these two though, it will be a bit of a circus, this isn't something that's going to fade away. Thinking Chucky on Doughty elbow kind of pre-game and during game antics, likely worse..........which will be fun.

It's firmly 100% on the refs and they should be held accountable.
I think its a complete joke that Tkachuk can get a multi game suspension for 'spearing' a guy simply by poking the back of his calf in a NON malicious manner that was spewed across the NHL news networks like he amputated the guy at the knee.
Yet we've got Dell who basically Hextal'd a guy in the mid section OUTSIDE of the crease in plane sight of all 4 officials and yet nothing was called, no penalty, no acknowledgement and ultimately no disciplinary action. I believe this particular event set the wheels in motion to which all the chaos eventually unfolded upon.
They simply cant let this crap continue to go on, as others have said I dont know if this is bias against the Flames in particular but when are they going to realize enough is enough BEFORE someone get's hurt real bad.
This next game is going to be a #### show, and I've got a feeling they'll be going after Johnny pretty more so than normal.

No Simek at the morning skate, but Goodrow appears in on 4th line. Looks like Joakim Ryan draws back in

Have they said that Goodrow will not be suspended? Didn't he instigate a fight in the final minute?
Weird. Lomberg got a suspension in a similar situation.

Personally, I don’t think Goodrow deserves a suspension. By the book he has earned it, but this wasn’t a premeditated attack like Lomberg. It was entirely reactionary and to a marginal hit. The fight was secondary to the hit in that particular play, whereas Lomberg’s fight was the sole incident of that isolated play.
At least that’s how I rationalize it. ‘Reactionary-instigator’ vs ‘Targetted-instigator’. Of course, almost all instigators are a reaction to SOMETHING, but the time in between makes the difference in my mind.

They must have rescinded it, which is stupid.
Typical NHL, even though the rule is in black and white, they make things up as they go.
This is what the DPS said regarding Lomberg:
Quote:
The incident occurred at 19:17 of the third period. Lomberg was assessed a minor penalty for instigating, a major for fighting and a game misconduct under Rule 46.12 (Instigator in Final Five Minutes of Regulation Time [or Anytime in Overtime]) and will serve the automatic one-game suspension in addition to the one-game sanction outlined above.

So automatic not so automatic.

Out of all the inconsistent rule calling that one is probably the most inconsistent. Don’t really care though. I have no problem with what Goodrow did, he is in the same weight class as Bennett and gave Bennett tons of time to get ready to fight. I would want the Flames player doing the same thing if roles were reversed. The rule is in place to stop cheap shots from happening and I don’t think what Goodrow did is anywhere close to cheap.
Plus losing Lomberg for two games is essentially a non punishment as far as I am concerned

I felt the same way about the Backlund hit and Wilson hit, but this is hockey 101... They teach this to you at the very base level of hockey... Don't watch your pass.
That aside, that was an amazing hockey hit. Straight shoulder to chest. Took the wind, literally, out of the sails. I hate to hear he was concussed, but man did he have it coming admiring that pass, with Bennett out there.

Confusing for sure, I though the suspension was if a instigator occurs in the last 2 minutes of the game.
Game sheet still has a 2 minute instigator shown,

Guy has played 14 games this season...sorry I take any injury news with a grain of salt. He might be seriously injured but I think they are saying he is injured no matter what.

From 46.22 Fines and Suspensions - Instigator in Final 5 minutes:
“The suspension shall be served unless, upon review of the incident, the Director of Hockey Operations, at his discretion, deems the incident is not related to the score, previous incidents in the game or prior games, retaliatory in nature, “message sending”, etc. The length of suspension will double for each subsequent offense. ”

I guess I could see the argument that:
- it was an immediate response from a player on the ice
- fights started after big hits have become quite common, so to suspend him for this play would be reaching (although, I’m personally of the opinion that every fight that immediately follows a big hit should come with an instigator because it’s ridiculous).
But some consistency would be nice. It’s unfortunate how much grey area is deliberately written into the rule book.

Liked the hit but not the timing.
Would have preferred we just let the Sharks leave the ice whimpering after a good beating rather than all fired up.

Huh, I’m totally opposite. I thought the timing was impeccable, sure seemed to send a message to the sharks that we weren’t gonna take their crap.

Remember the narrative earlier in the season that the Flames were soft and would be pushed around. Sportsnet raving about the Oilers toughness because Kassian and Lucic jump guys?
Now the Flames a mean goons lol
Hope someone tunes in Mantha tonight

Guaranteed to happen. Kane will hop on the ice as soon as Bennett is on.
Hopefully Kane is over confident and under estimates Bennett and gets KTFO!
