The NHL uses a loose definition of spear. Reference that time Tkachuk tapped that Red Wing guy on the leg and they called it a spear.

In that incident Lomberg came off the bench and then had the instigator. This insinuates Peters tapped him on the shoulder. That explains the Peters fine. As far as the Lomberg suspension that was from an instigator in the dying minutes, not sure why this did not come up with Goodrow.

The fine was part of an instigator with less than 5 minutes left. Lomberg got the extra game because he left the bench to start an altercation. Unless they recinded the instigator, Goodrow will get a game and Deboer the fine.

I thought it was silly Lomberg was suspended in the first place, but what am I missing between him and Goodrow?

Is it just that Lomberg came off the bench vs Goodrow responding immediately? If so, does rule 46.22 (Instigating in the Final Five Minutes of Regulation) cover that? Or is this yet another 'how did this make me feel' call the NHL makes.

If it's a rule, and you want it enforced... $10,000 from coach, and Goodrow sits a game. It's a fight in the final 5... enforce it or re-write it.

Lomberg got one game for instigating a fight in the last 5 mins (Peters also got fined) and an additional game for leaving the bench to start an altercation. It was a legal line change, which is why it was only 1 game rather than 10 games. So you are right, but letter of the rule Goodrow should get a game and the coach the fine...unless they rescind the instigator.

I don't know if they just didn't want to announce anything because of the stadium game and other announcements (heritage classic, Dallas stadium game, and STL all-star game), but it may come before the puck drops for the SJ game. I guess we will see if Goodrow plays if nothing is said.

They haven't rescinded the instigator yet, it still shows on nhl.com. Since it's an automatic 1 game we should hear something today I suppose.

I thought he got 2 games (but followed up with no research) so thanks for clarifying that.

It's a rule for a reason, so you'd have to assume it's enforced. More than likely it won't be though.
I think the DOPS would have been more than happy to bury these silly suspensions in the news cycle
