Default LeBrun: Treliving's primary need is a left handed 3rd pair d-man, preferably a rental

From LeBrun's notebook on the Athletic

https://theathletic.com/744155/2019/...k-controversy/

Quote:
No question the GM will want to act before Feb. 25. His primary need, I believe, is a left-handed, third-pair defenceman. Every team that aspires to win in the playoffs wants to bolster its blueline before the deadline in one form or another. Another lefty on D is what Treliving will aim for I think, preferably a rental.
Looks more like speculation, but LeBrun has shown he has sources with the Flames over the last couple of years.

I know some will be upset because they think Valimaki and Kylington will fill that role fine and will want Treliving to address other shortcomings on the roster.

So, does he want a vet who will force one of the rooks to play better if they want to keep their spot?

LD is the least of our concerns, honestly.

Depth back there is good. Prout is really quite bad

Schlemko makes sense and probably won’t cost a lot. Can play both sides and has experience filling in on the top 4

Kronwall please and thank you

Playing good minutes still in Detroit, is a lefty, experience with Peters, definite rental

I don't put much weight into anything reported about the Flames - as I think BT plays his cards incredibly close to his chest. We hear very little about his moves in advance - big moves like Neal, and the Carolina trade came pretty much out of nowhere except for some buzz about Hamilton.
On the other hand, I'm sure Conroy can't keep a lid on anything, so maybe that's where Lebrun gets this stuff.
In a perfect world I'd like to see:
- A goalie deal at the deadline (Smith+ something for a better veteran back-up)
- One more top 6 forward, ideally a centre but not necessarily

But depending on acquisition cost I'd also be fine going into the playoffs with this group and would not want to see any player deleted from the roster. Chemistry is a funny thing and this group seems to have found it.

Kronwall+Howard for Smith+Eat Bread+pick?
Just spit ballin'. That probably doesn't get it done.

Not much for rentals out there in the LHD department.

Maybe:
Bouwmeester
Kronwall
Gunnarson

Thats about all the pending UFA rental LHD on non playoff teams I'd even consider. And really, the ONLY one I'd be interested in getting would be Kronwall. His bit of nastiness would be beneficial in a deep run scenario.

No not really. After the current trio I would say the Flames don't have a single legit blueline prospect.
I would not want them to deal: Dube, Kylington, Andersson, Valimaki, Parsons.
I would also not deal some of the guys drafted last year that are taking positive steps as the value trade-wise just wouldn't be there. Same with guys like Gawdin and Philips who I'd want to hang on to until we know what they are more.l

So that leaves you with guys like
- Eat Bread
- Gillies
- Foo
- Czarnik

I'd be OK with any two of that four.
Perhaps if the Wings were in on either Czarnik or Foo as free agents that gets it done.

Pretty darn close imo but the picks gonna be a 2nd for sure... intriguing trade proposal; wasn’t Howard linked to us earlier this year?? I know we’ve apparently kicked tires on him before just don’t know how recently.

I think we would need more money going back the other way as well to fit the cap hits of Kronwall and Howard no??

I know you weren’t suggesting it, but if the flames get Bouwmeester, I’ll lose my mind

Treliving’s primary need is a parade planner.

Too soon?

Kronwall would be nice. Can call out orders in Swedish to Rasmus.

Cundari, Ramo, and Poirier. But it would have to happen now to make sense.

Yeah, a little bit of snarl and depth on the back end is good to have in the playoffs. See: Engelland, Deryk (no, the Flames aren't going to acquire him). Prout isn't sufficient since he's a) a righty and b) is a liability offensively and probably defensively.

Kronwall looks like a great target depending on the cost. No dealing away 1st-round picks, please.
