That's how many a hockey player was taught to play the game and still is. It's not rationalization to say a player can avoid unnecessary injuires if he keeps his head up.

As a spectator I knew the game had gotten really teastie and was watching who Bill put out because I knew there would be some rough play. Surely and NHL defensemen should have been ready.

This is a hit that is earily similar to the Dumba hit and I expect them to be treated in the exact same way. Hits that would be considered a good hockey play 10 years ago are now being looked at very differently. The old phrase of keep your head up is partially true, but there is more onus on the hitter to make sure that the hit isn't a predatory hit with the intent of injuring the opponent.

Big hits in a late blowout game are always going to raise the ire of the opposition

Right on the border. Shouldn't be any discipline, but knowing the league, they will just because it is getting attention.

Simek should have been more ready, and he should have kept his head up.... that’s the only way to protect yourself and avoid injury.

Still that doesn’t mean the hit was clean. Looked a little late, and from a purely non by the book perspective, do you need to throw a hit like that with 30 left in a 3 goal game. I wouldn’t like it in the reverse.

On the other hand, the other team takes liberties with our smaller team all year, it was happening again tonight with clownes like Kane. One thing the Flames have done well this year is be gritty, and stick up for themselves and make teams play for the liberties.

Bennett should get some games for the late hit IMo, but I’m torn because I feel the Flames need to walk the line based on how other teams try to nutralise their skill, might be a necessary evil.

some games?!? Plural?

Its not like it just happened for no reason either...came after multiple SJ cheap shots. If it was just some quiet game with a 3 goal lead things would be much different.

Default Dan O' Halloran

Dan O'Halloran should be held accountable for his pathetic refereeing. Plain as day he watched Dell slash Bennett and then the prick punches at Bennett's chest when he see's Bennett going toward the guy who slashed him.

Bennett could be special, the guy can fight with the best, he’s slowly becoming productive and he can throw massive hits. These guys are rare, very rare.

Not a Tom Wilson fan but he’s extremely valuable. Bennett could be trending in that direction and that’s awesome. As for this hit, I’ve seen way worse go unpenalized. Hit was right in the chest too. Loved it

Yup, loved the hit. Its a contact league. A little late but not too late, shoulder to chest.

Also love the Kane salt.

He won’t be suspended. The hit was, all things considered, very similar to Dumba on Backlund.

Necessary? Absolutely not. Legal? I think so.

I’m thinking it’s 2. 3 worst case so that’s what a mean by some games. Agree with you on the rest, but the discipline (if any) will not and should not take any context into account.

But as a fan, I do take context into account, which is what I meant by necessary evil. The Sharks were no saints in the game, and our team needs to push back cause goodness knows the refs won’t do their jobs. So a huge part of me gets it, even likes it. Another huge part of me doesn’t really see the need of blowing anyone up with 20 seconds left in a 3 goal game, we don’t need those kind of injuries in the game,

The hit was beautiful and a work of art. It was clean. It was not late. No hit to head. Chest primary point of contact.

This is a video that should be played around the dressing rooms of the league as an example of how you hit someone and how you play tit-for-tat. Someone spears you? (1) run up the score (2) level a guy with a clean hit in the dying moments of the game. (3) win the fight in the after-math.

The sharks just got a shot of Sam fireball Bennett and it was too hot to handle.

This isn't someone being hit in a vulnerable position. He sees Bennett coming towards him before he makes his pass. Gets hit square through the chest because he just ignored it.

In this case I think 'keep your head up' is perfectly valid advice.

Dumba hit was worse, this one was not even close to the head and sounds like the ppl who have timed it say that it was right on the button 0.6 seconds. If the NHL suspends Bennett for this the body of officiating decisions going against the Flames is really starting to stack up.

It may not be “good enough” for you but it’s also common sense.

Keeping your head up has been a thing since hockey has been a thing. It’s like saying “hey you can cross the street without looking now, cars should know not to hit you”.

Hockey is fast. People are human. Mistakes are made, it’s a game of high emotion. To say “it’s not good enough” if a guy should be told to keep his head up is absolutely ridiculous.

Just say what you wanna say and that is that you think hitting should be removed from the game. And that’s where we are headed. It’ll be a worse game for it.
