I've been hoping for some 3M for awhile now, come on Frolik, show them all where you belong. Exciting news.

Going to record the game and attempt to avoid the score till I watch it tomorrow. We shall see how that goes.

Go Flames Go!

I don't think any 'group' is saying that. Not in the last few weeks. I am not sure any one is saying that. I think you are making this up.
People are saying Smith will still start 15ish games (1/3 or so) to manage Rittich's workload.

We used to play Montreal quite often on NYE unless I’m remembering wrong.

Been a while since the flames looked like that dominant team they were earlier.

Something just looks off the past few weeks.

Hoping to see a much better effort tonight. Have a happy & safe new year celebration folks.

Going back many years ago, I feel like the Habs were always the team in town on new years eve.

With CGY having last change it will be interesting to see if Peters keeps Gaudreau away from Braun. Johnny should be able to play his game against any opponent but last game in SJ Braun won that match up.

I'll be looking for a pumped up Gaudreau and line mates to lead the way tonight - the last game was just ok.

I've long been a supporter of Backlund but I want to see him make and finish plays, well, more plays because he's been good but you know there is a higher level he can get to.

Use the middle, shoot from the middle and just be a hungry team tonight.

Yes, Deboer was pissed after the last game, can't seem to find the article but he was pretty disappointed with the point production from Karlsson against the Oilers, said something along the lines of "any dman could get 4 points against that team". Justifiable in my opinion, anything short of a 5 point night against Edmonton is just not good enough.

Damn - this should be fun. Calgary was THE BEST team in the NHL for a bit, but seemed to have cooled down recently. The sharks were one of the biggest disappointments considering how the team adds up on paper, but have recently found a way to win and seem to be coalescing into that many were expecting. Have these two teams ever met in the reg season being #s 1&2 in the division? Not that I can remember. Both team have lots of reason to be motivated. This SHOULD be the best game of the year - we should be seeing a playoff type of effort from both sides... we'll see.

Montreal was tradition and a damn good one at that. I believe the switch came when the NHL introduced division intensive scheduling to create better rivalries and we lost a bunch of eastern opponent games.

So while we lost exciting games like the Habs on New Years we gained more intense Monday night Flames vs Wild thrillers. The NHL was really on to something.

I guess we're only 3-2 in the past 5 NYE games, but I seem to recall that we have a pretty good record for the NYE games (maybe going back further than 5 years).

Predicting the pattern of a celebratory NYE continues this year with a win.

They looked pretty great against Tampa a week or so ago. But you're right, they haven't looked quite as hungry over the last handful of games. Tonight would be a good opportunity for a statement game and to get on a roll going into the new year.

It was never about creating better rivalries. It was about cutting down on travel. For several years, teams played only 18 games against opponents from the opposite conference. It became pretty nearly impossible to draw the schedule in a way that would land the Habs in Calgary at the end of every December.

Then, after the lost season, the league finally smartened up and realized that (for instance) having Sidney Crosby tour the western markets only once every two years was bad for business. So we're back up to a home-and-home against E.C. teams. I suspect the Calgary vs. Montreal NYE game never came back because the Habs didn't want it.
