Flames have a young emerging star goaltender (I stand by that statement) yet they keep trying to reignite an aging vet past his prime. Time to stop pretending Smith is a starter and treat him like a backup that he is.

Difference today was goaltending and secondary scoring. St louis wanted it more, but it was a winnable game. Smith lets in a couple softies once again, Allen was considerably better. Top line could only find a way to score once while the Blues got goals from their non-superstars.
If Smith could just br average and a complete sieve right now, this team would be right there with Tampa. The guy really shouldn’t be playing home games anymore, the crowd jumps on him and the bronx cheers can’t be giving this team confidence.

Chad Johnson, he’s without a doubt an upgrade and that says a lot about smith. Smith has an .886 save % now with this defense in front of him? He rarely faces that many shots and makes routine saves look difficult. Any goalie in this league is better right now, the amount of softies he’s let is crazy. The first goal today he leaves his post at the exact time he shouldn’t of, easy save that every goalie in the AHL should have let alone the NHL. This is a big ####ing joke now considering the numbers Rittich has put up. If the flames just got slightly below average goal tending from smith they would be 7 pts up on any team in the division. Wasted opportunity today that could bite the flames in the ass big time with another tough game vs the Jets on the horizon. Enough with these charity starts for Mike Smith, get him off the team ASAP

Isn't that what they've been doing since his last start? gets 1 start in 5 games? I thin that's how back up roll?

Just a dumb loss, Flames were asleep to start the game, and Smith gave the opposition two freebies. No idea why Bill felt the need to push Smith in there with the Xmas break imminent.

You think he is better? I seriously doubt it.
You think he is available in a trade?

Mikko koskinen if he does the right thing and not re-sign with the tire fire to the north.

Well, duh. I am talking about an IN-SEASON replacement. The Flames are obviously making changes in goal in the summer.

Maybe, but this is a huge gamble that would also be very costly. The Flames re not getting another team's starting goalie for anything but a massive overpayment.

Team really should’ve picked up Curtis McElhinney, 7-3-1, 2.36 GAA and a .920 sv%. Smith can only dream about those numbers. A Rittich and McElhinney tandem would give me some confidence to finish the season. Maybe we can throw a mediocre prospect Carolina’s way at the TDL.

I’d rather the flames use Jon Gillies and let him stink up the joint than watch a 36 year old goalie who will be off the team next year let in goals for fun.
Way too much loyalty to a guy whose done nothing for this team. Again, he should never play a game for the flames again.

Because the Christmas break was imminent. Rittich is not going to start 60-games this season, and it would be foolish to leave your other goalie on the bench for at least two weeks of inactivity.
The Flames are in a difficult position, but one for which there really is not a good solution. They are going to have to ride this out.

people are gonna defend Smith all year
just like Hiller and Ramo
then next season he won't be in the NHL
just like Hiller and Ramo
Its maddening to have such a good thing be ruined by this goal tending...Flames are in a decent spot but could be so much better right now. And with the games getting tougher in the second half you can't just piss away points.

The NHL is not a development league, and Gillies is not anywhere near ready to replace even Mike Smith. Gillies has won fewer games in the AHL, and has worse numbers than Smith. This is just a terrible idea all around.

Forsberg? Absolutely I think he can be better than smith, in fact I'd say he'd be better than Rittich as soon as next season. Pretty high on that goalie.
Binnington? Why not? St.Louis has 3 or 4 goalies in their stable, they can and will likely part with one. Binnington could be had for sure.

The league is also not a retirement league, Gillies would be developed better in the NHL and not in front of that garbage D in stockton

Ugh. You play your backup against poor teams and you won’t win them all. That said, unless you’re confident in Rittich as the number one, it’s clear Smith is no longer a 1B, and barely holding on as a #2.
What was most annoying was the 6-0-0 in his last 6 decisions stat being thrown out there...

Lehner (2.54 / .917) has put up quality backup-like numbers. Islanders will likely be seller soon.
Tristan Jarry (2.89 / .909) is behind Murray and DeSmith and has put up decent numbers in the AHL.
Darcy Kuemper (2.81 / .910) is on a bottom feeding team and Adin Hill has seized the starting spot with Raanta down.
Chicago is being forced to rebuild and Forsberg (2.76 / .912) wouldn’t cost a tonne to acquire.
Mrazek (2.60 / .897) and McE (2.36 / .920) could be had from Carolina.
There are options out there.

Please note that there is a stark difference between defending Mikle Smith and recognizing that in their current situation the Flames don't really have any option to make any changes to their goaltending. I see a bunch of people who are aware of this, and virtually NO ONE defending Smith's poor performance in goal today.

A very Calgary Flames loss. This team is good but not Nashville or Winnipeg good yet.

Today? He has the 3rd worst save % in the league.
