Now I come here and see that Oiler fans are whining about being jipped again. Amazing.

As far as I can tell, the thinking is that it was the equivalent of a delayed offside. Yeah, the guy going into the box was offside, but the puck wasn't touched by an Oiler before he got his foot off the ice.
Oilers are saved by poor puck control and slow skaters...

Oh nooooooo!!!!!! Poor Coilers!!!!!
Wherever will they find a plug that can sort of skate up and down the ice, occasionally without falling, and not score or defend?
Oh right.... they have 100 of them.

^ Interesting - that is a play that I wish they would review and suspend for, but I don't recall them actually doing so in the past.
<insert Oiler conspiracy rant here>
I will say though, that Khaira =/= star, therefore suspension

Interesting that a direct hit to the head like that with a stick wasn't given a stiffer punishment. I don't think two games is enough personally.

With McDavid on the ice, the Oilers are outscoring opponents 25-16 in roughly 500 5-on-5 minutes. In the 950 or so minutes that he hasn't been out there in those situations, the Oilers are being outscored 24-36. Those numbers are staggering, but they reaffirm the sad reality that the Oilers are one of the best teams in the league with McDavid on the ice. Without him, there's a viable argument to be made that they're the worst team in the league.

Eric,
that is a staggering stat, wow! We all knew it was bad, I am just so glad there are people out there who are willing to dig into this.
Every single Oilers fan should read this. We should post this on the main boards of HF. Would be interesting to see what the fans from the whole league think about this and not just Flames and Oiler fans.

Is there a 5vs5 stat ranking somewhere for all 32 teams. How bad are they compared to the rest of the league?

They're slightly better than Seattle for now.

That stat doesn't seem so shocking to me, really. Basically McDavid makes a positive difference of around 1.8 goals per 60 minutes that he plays, so probably around 0.6 goals per game considering I guess he's around 20 minutes of even strength play per game. Is that so crazy for star number one C?
It's also not so surprising that the Oilers are a bad 5v5 team without him.
I was actually more surprised to look at the Flames' 5v5 stats on nhl.com and see how much the Flames are actually the beneficiaries of special teams goals this year. I mean, the Flames are clearly a much, much better overall team than the Oilers are, but it's surprising to see how much of the advantage in goals comes on special teams. Quite the turnaround from last year.

Sather started the whole “woe is us” schtick the year or two before he left the Oilers. Pulled all the press lackies in like Jones to believe he was too smart and dangerous for the league to allow the franchise to succeed. Saying if he had unlimited funds like the Rags had at the time, this is pre salary cap era remember, he’d win multiple cups. He went to the Rangers, and didn’t.
But Sather Jr (Lowe) happily took up that torch in Edmonton when Sather left, in multiple ways, including the “everyone is against us” routine, and the press are as enthusiastic as ever to also help continue the persecution complex as the easy excuse for pushing the Oilers down just when it looks they’re supposedly getting back up the ladder.

+24/60 = 40%
Overall the worst team five on five is Arizona at 41.74%
So yeah they're the worst team in hockey without McDavid on the ice, with the one caveat being that you'd have to remove every team's best player to get a true indication.

Some you could examine. You could look at Toronto's record minus Matthews for an time this year. Or Getzlaf in Anaheim. Bergeron has been out for a while in Boston. How is Nashville without both Arvidsson and Forsberg?
Prediction - not as bad as Edmonton.

Did you listen to Sather on Prime Time Sports recently? Holy crap that guy is firmly stuck in the 80s glory years. Also he's still arrogant as all hell.
