I was just a kid in ‘89 but can still remember them hoisting the cup, man that seems like an eternity. This team is so exciting, I really hope they can keep rolling, such a treat to watch!

Yeah, I think even in 85-86 when we lost in the finals we knew then it was just a matter of time, and in 89 that team was just incredible from the start, so much chemistry and character.

I haven't seen that kind of up and down the lineup chemistry since 89, the closest to that feeling was the 04 Flames, so many great characters, and cohesiveness.

This team seems to slightly lack that because, after our top 2 lines, the bottom 2 lines don't have it yet, and injuries, up and down from the farm and struggles with Neal can't be helping. The locker room seems to be solid, and the top line is as dominant as I think the flames have had, right up there with those amazing lines we had in our top 2 in 89.

What's funny is even that year, there was always Vernon haters. People would argue about if he was the guy to take us to the cup lol That guy had a rough run with the Flames fans, one of the things I feel bad about during those years.

I'm just happy that I finally get to see a team that is so solid and consistent in this very tough league, it was far easier to be dominant in the 80s, the parity in the league now is so different from back then, teams winning 3-4 cups in a row back in the late 70's 80s, that will never happen again.

Not to me. In 89 the Flames were meant to be the best team in the league. There was no surprises. We expected them to win every game except against the Oilers. That team was extremely good on paper and on the ice.

89 had a few more veterans playing big roles, but there is something to be said about the young guys starting to believe in themselves that they could contend. So not as much 89 but maybe 87 or 88:

Our current roster doesn't have the equivalent of the "aged" Joe Mullen who at age 31 was second oldest on the team and scored 51 goals and 110 points that year, leading the team.

In 89 our 4th liners were scoring 20 goals (Mark Hunter 22 goals) and leading the NHL in penalty minutes (Tim Hunter)

So we're a ways away yet, but there are some similarities.

oh, and our #1 goalie went:

37 wins - 6 losses - 5 ties that regular season. We don't have that on the current roster either.

The thing that's similar is that we didn't have a Gretzky, or a Mario or a Roy. No superstars (MacInnis was closest I guess). Just a deep roster full of extremely good players.

Mullen
MacInnis
Niewendyk
Gilmour

A few more who were trophy winners in their time as Flames:

Suter
McCrimmon

Then all stars like

Loob
Fleury
Roberts
Vernon

each of who could have a case made for the HHOF for them.

Best Faceoff Man in his era, one of the best ever in Otto

Guys who were leaders on their former teams and playing depth roles like:

Mark Hunter
Rob Ramage (all star before and after his stint with the Flames, but played a depth role for us)

And franchise renown heart and soul guys like Peplinski and Lanny to keep the team unified.

Fab 5 crushing it again. Think Alan Quine could be a real revelation on the bottom 6. For the few shifts he plays per game, he’s been very productive. Even in the Oilers game he found a way to score, although it was taken back. If he can keep finding a way be productive, He should stay up with the big club.

lol went looking at the 89 stats, Montreal (115) and Calgary (117) were top 2 by a country mile in the league points wise, Washington had 92 in 3rd overall

Mario had 85 goals and 114 assist for 199 points, Vernon with his great season had a 2.65 GAA and a shade under 900 with .897 lol

Looking back at that 89 team a bit more...

I didn't realize that Joe Mullen lead the playoffs in goals in both 86 and 89.

Or that you can have 4 players at +40 or better (Gilmour +45, Patterson +44, McCrimmon +43 and Macoun +40) and they still don't win the +/- award that year.
