I would sleep well knowing that the Oilers had no chance of getting Hughes, while savouring the sweet taste of first round victory after removing that stain of a team from the first round of the playoffs.
After that, would it be too much to ask for the Ducks to sneak into 2nd in the Pacific so we could beat them in the 2nd round?

I feel like the true sentiment of this thread has been lost in the last page or two.

Bring on the playoff BOA.
That's what I was weaned on, and I for one hope they make the playoffs.
Ironically, I always cheer for the Oil to lose.
Edmonton is no good.

No. I don’t want them to make the playoffs. Ever. Even a glimmer of hope or a shred of possibility is terrible.

The Flames beating the Oilers in a playoff series would make this the best season since 04. I would love to face them I think now is the team im confident we can beat them with.

I want the goaltending situation handled, but outside of that I'd love to face the Oilers. We're deep, and mentally tough. Soft goals against are our weak point. Avoid those, and the Oilers are nothing but a stepping stone.

Yea i would only want to face them if we get our goaltending in order. But i have faith BT will get something done to fix it.

I don’t think you can underestimate the effect of Ference’s comments in all this.
You can bet your ass that Edmonton’s coaching team is using them to get their team to show some pride for a change.
How long that lasts is another matter.

Last night's win over Philly ...
Five on five:
Shots 16-26
Shot attempts 32-48
Scoring chances 16-25
High Danger Chances 3-14
McDavid's line high danger chances
0-8
and they won 4-1
That is the definition of unsustainable.

It still amazes me in a sport that is this technical and skill based, what a difference belief and momentum seems to make.

What amazes me is how media get caught up in results to the point that they seem to ignore how they're being generated.
Articles on the Hitch effect, being contenders now when the team has really been out played of late and is heading for a correction.
Under McLellan
Shot attempts 50.2%
Shots 50.9%
Scoring Chances 50.2%
High Danger Chances 51.1%
Shooting % 6.6%
Save % .919
PDO .985
Under Hitchcock
Shot attempts 48.7%
Shots 49.4%
Scoring Chances 45.3%
High Danger Chances 41.0%
Shooting % 8.9%
Save % .939
PDO 1.028
They cant' continue to play this way and win. Skid is coming ... maybe for Xmas!

Everything is coming up sevens right now up there. Chiassion has a 30% shooting percentage. McDavid is scoring on bad goalies from behind the net. Larsson scored. Koskinen is the new Talbot, which means they better sign another #1 goalie next year.
Philly looked terrible out there, like worst team of the league playing their worst game of the year and still came out with better metrics. The success of the Oilers now is somehow executing the trap when they couldn’t execute any strategy ever before. They also interfere, hold and run picks all game but rarely get penalized. One way to get that horrible D to show better was just having them stay collapsed in front of the net for 60 minutes.
Once they get in games where the goals don’t come so easy or Koskinen loses god mode the slide is coming. Not to mention those players don’t have the endurance or conditioning to keep this up.
Did anyone see Frankenberry’s stick handling/ shot? It was like a semi truck weaving with a beach ball. How did this guy get ranked so high?

Great post, and I agree with the point.
But these HD numbers always bother me. How could McDavid's line have none? Chiasson's goal was clearly an open shot from the slot. And McDavid got in behind the D for a pseudo-breakaway once, if not twice. Those are just off the top of my head. To suggest they had zero HD chances makes no sense.
Oh, and McDavid's goal from behind the net - wasn't that off a rebound from a Draisaitl shot right in front?
Every single time I see HD scoring chance numbers, my first thought is always: that's not what I just watched.

Now, now Bingo, if you show that to Oiler fans they'll accuse you of not watching the games. That they're awesome and it was also all T-Mac's fault for not taking advantage of the awesome roster that Chia had built, and that Chia should be GM of the year for recognizing that and firing T-Mac.
I don't know, I've been watching their games, they are to be fair structurally better. But they still have a bad defense that's allowing too many chances, the difference is their goaltending.

The PDO number is really the key stat. I like the concept of PDO where anything outside of about .99 to 1.01 is likely due to luck. So there previous record was a little unlikely but there current PDO is ridiculous.

Looks like it, let’s hope. The ‘Find a way Flames’ say hello though. I’m not sure the stats explain teams that try to play a very defensive style as accurately.
