You have to love Rittich's enthusiasm. So refreshingly innocent.

People need to let up on Smith. He was great in his last 6 games and probably got injured before the weak one tonight.

Even if he's not injured, I can't understand "fans" cheering for his failure just so they can say I told you so on CP.
Top of the West, great, exciting hockey and some people just have to have a whipping boy.

did he get injured before the weak one last game too?

Guy has an .888 save percentage on the top team in the west...this is the NHL, its not about a whipping boy he hasn't been good enough. Without a drastic change this will be his last season in the NHL.

Have higher expectations...average goal tending shouldn't be considered "playing great"

obviously wishing for an injury was way too far

I don't think you need to respond to every single comment about Smith. It's one thing to have an opinion, it's quite another to ram it down our throats ad nauseam.

I feel like Monahan has reached another level.

Through the first quarter of the season, he was playing okay but I think he was also the benefactor of some great play from Lindholm and Gaudreau. It seems that now he is also driving the play, he is playing with purpose and seems really confident.

The shot from the hashmarks tonight for a goal, the pass to Gaudreau in OT. It just seems like he is reaching another level with his play.

Why should we let up on him? There is so many defenders on here for him...

It doesn't let up the fact that the guy lets in absolutely routine saves almost every game and costs us more than he is worth. Smith sucks, he is at the tail end of his career and i'm ####ing sick of watching this guy blow our season. End of story. I watched Hiller/Ramo #### show display, flew down to Anaheim to watch the boys get destroyed by #### goal tending. I had enough,

That was such a fun one.

I'm still convinced Smith's confidence is just really shaken - maybe to the point he pulled himself going into the second period. Good on him for fighting through it the past few games, but I think it'll be a while before he gets back to his old form. Didn't like the fake cheers from the crowd tonight.

And how lucky are we to have Johnny. Honestly, there were a couple of powerplay shifts in this game where he made at least 4 moves or plays that - if any other player had made them - you'd drop your jaw. For him though, it's just par for the course. He's something special, and his contract is about the best value of any in the league right now.

I loved his touch passes all over the offensive zone tonight. He is getting lots of love for his shots today, but those touch passes were something else.

Good lord. No. He’s not a ‘whipping boy’ he just sucks. It’s painfully clear at this point that we’ve gotten to the top *despite* Mike Smith. He VERY clearly should not be considered the starting goalie at this point. He should star, at most, 1/3 of the games and pray that he finds consistency doing so. David Rittich absolutely and unequivocally should be considered the starter going forward, and that was painfully clear weeks ago despite Smiths cute 6 game run of decent play. It has nothing to do with ‘I told you so’, it’s just obvious.

To be honest I see this with fan bases in all sports, particularly on message boards. Mike Smith isn’t even the most prominent one with over the top defenders here, I’d give that to Sam Bennett. But being a hard core Ravens fan I have watched insanely out of touch fans defend Joe Flacco to absolutely no end. This current defense of a terrible Mike Smith very much reminds me of that. Thankfully as a ravens fan I am no longer going to have to tell people how bad Joe Flacco is given that Lamar Jackson is now our official starter. I’m looking forward to that with Mike Smith here. He sucks. Move on.

He had a 925 or so over the last month and was on a six game winning streak. Against Minnie the Flames were outshot by 10 and he had a shutout. Average goaltending gets them a loss in that game.

Basically, to me it's fair to criticize his poor performances, but not fair to then dismiss his good ones by saying any goalie would have won those games. If that said fair, then Rittich gets no credit either, because there haven't been many where he was tasked that hard either.

Look, I am not questioning Smith's character or will to win. But IMO, you have to have your head pretty deep in the sand if you think Smith can bring this team any longterm success. I just don't see this team making any serious noise in the palyoffs with Smith. And that is such a waste, because the rest of the team is the deepest we have had in a long long time.

I find it annoying how Wills, Loubo, and Steinberg go out of their way to praise Smith for even thr most routine saves, rather than admit that Smith is not a guy you can win with anymore.

And before people start piling on, I never cheer for anyone getting hurt and hope Smith can come back soon. I just think it would be better served if Smith can just become a strong backup for the team.

He’ll never get back to his ‘old form’, which honestly wasn’t that good any way. Guy is a backup level goalie, plain and simple.
