The Jericho, NY. native dismissed rumours that he plans to spend his senior season at Harvard and sign with the New York Rangers in 2020.

“I know people think I have some plan to sign with the Rangers because of where I grew up,” Fox said. “But my dream, my goal, is to play in the NHL. As soon as possible.”

Sara Civian of The Athletic reports the Hurricanes are "very confident" the team will sign Fox and adds Hurricanes head of defensive development has visited with Fox multiple times since the trade.

I wonder if the Fox signing in Calgary problem wasn't the market, but his insistence of a guaranteed spot.

Calgary with fairly deep prospect pool on the blueline said that can't happen. They checked back at the draft to see if he'd sign and earn it like other players and the answer was no.

I always thought that was a big factor. And that it was ironic that he couldn't make any team that picked him up.

Could be. But why would he want carolina instead? no matter what the GM says, that is one of the deepest young blue lines in the league. If he has some weak games halfway through the season, he likely would find his ice time cut.

He hasn't exactly said he wants Carolina. People are making feel good statements, but so did the Flames (and Erixon) prior to him flying the coop, especially right after he was drafted.

Story on Erixon wanting out because of roster space:

Based on his comments, I think it was a big factor. Calgary has its top four, plus Stone, Andersson and Valimaki. You could put Kylington on that list as well. Could he beat out three of them? Maybe, but it's certainly not guaranteed.

So when he says he wants to play in the NHL "ASAP" (which on its face suggests he doesn't want to return to Harvard for a fourth year) I don't think its a stretch to say he doesn't want to spend next year in the AHL either. He wants to make the jump to the NHL next year and that may or may not happen in Carolina given their prospect depth on the blue line. However, it sounds like Carolina would be open to making a trade for some forward help (while at the same time opening a spot for Fox on the blue line), which makes a lot of sense IMO.

It's not like Fox picked Carolina. His rights were traded there.

I think Fox just really wanted to be on the east coast. After the trade Mackenzie tweeted that from what he heard Carolina had a better chance of signing him as an East coast team.

Is this speculation or did you hear this? All I remember is that after the trade, Treliving’s explanation for including Fox was they had concerns about signing him IIRC.

Fox is saying he wants to play in the NHL ASAP. I don’t equate that to demanding a spot but I guess we’ll see. It sure paints him as entitled brat if you believe that’s what he is saying. But the question to ask him is why he didn’t sign with Calgary after his sophomore year. Has he ever spoken about this?

I feel like the Fox narrative has done a 180 once he was no longer part of the team.

I feel that guys who go the college route should have to declare for the draft like football does it.

The roster space and depth thing is such a cop out in my opinion.

If you're a first rounder and you think you're that good, you gotta come into camp and take a job. Not have one handed to you. Those aren't the players I ever want on my team.

I think he wanted no part of signing in Calgary and most of the reason was due to being a smaller Canadian market where there is still a huge microscope on the team. I do think the factors of having a top 4 established and 3 other really good d prospects could have played a part? Maybe the fact Calgary had an incredibly hyped d corp for the past couple of seasons that also underachieved played a part. None of us really know.

Treliving said he wouldn’t sign which made it easier to include him in the deal. Looking st that trade again today 31 games into the year I would easily make that trade again. We got the top line right shot we desperately needed and also got a stud Blueliner with amazing potential.

I said I liked the trade from the get go but mentioned that it was certainly a risky move but really the Hurricanes took the bigger risk. They traded 2 guys picked 5th overall when they were only 23 and 21 for a proven top pairing D (who was being traded for the second time at 25 years old despite all the tools of a franchise D), another forward who was a year from UFA and only one season of 20-40 and a prospect drafted in the 3rd round who could walk in 2 years (playing st Harvard a school where it is easily justifiable to stay all 4 years). It is funny to read comments early in this thread about this being worse than the Phaneuf trade. This is the best blockbuster player for player trade I can remember the Flames making.

I said "I wonder" to start my post.

Treliving did say there were issues with signing the player and they asked again on draft weekend.

Whether or not Fox demanded a spot, I expect he rightfully would have been asking questions about his likelihood to crack the NHL roster right out of college. And fortunately for the fans here, Calgary is in a situation where they certainly can not even say there is a high probability.

In keeping tradition of ostracized defensive prospects he may now be known as Aaron Fox.

I have nothing at all against Fox and hope he has a good career. He didn't string the team along, told them right away he wasn't going to sign and kept it quiet so the team could take their time moving him for the right return. He never said anything bad about Calgary as far as I know. I don't like the college UFA rule and still think it's a loophole that needs closing but as things sit he couldn't have handled it better.

Tom on the other hand strung the team along until the last minute and then only gave us the choice of one team to trade to. Amazingly we still got a decent return for him but he handled it badly all around.

I've never heard that. All I've heard is interpretations of things Treliving said.
