I can't wait until the Yotes are in Houston, Seattle is warring with Vancouver, and Melnyk moves the Sens to QC.

I would have figured that the NHL would have found a way to move the Arizona Coyotes back into Phoenix. IIRC, one of the reasons that they tried to stay so long in Arizona was due to the national TV contract which liked (or demanded?) that the NHL have a presence in that high population area. Also, wasn't it working rather decently until they moved to Glendale?
At least this move - if it happens - will create a natural rivalry with Dallas. Rivalries are always good hockey.

Houston metro pop is a couple million more than Phoenix...pretty sure it's the only city bigger than Phoenix without an NHL team. Move makes a ton of sense for a lot of reasons.
Now KK and Bettman will have to revert to classics like Portland, Kansas City, Quebec City...Phoenix...and Austin (that's a new one...but hockey might be considered just hipster enough in Texas to work). Gonna have to be one helluva sweetheart deal for any of those cities to make more sense than staying in the Dome until Canada turns 200.

Buying an existing franchise is technically different from creating a new one.
Might make a difference, might not.
And yeah this is a cool idea. The Coyotes are pretty permanently bad and that's boring. (Sorry Bouw ) A Houston - Dallas rivalry beats that any day.

The league has been adamant over the last couple of decades now that teams stay put as long as someone is willing to operate a team in their current market. It's why hopes of relocating the Penguins to Kansas City, the Predators to Hamilton, the Coyotes to Hamilton/K-W have all failed. As long as there was a local owner - or in Pittsburgh's case, arena negotiations - the teams stay. And it's why Atlanta relocated. Nobody wanted that team in that city.
What's interesting here is that it seems like the ownership well has finally gone dry in Phoenix. Add in the difficulty in getting a new arena deal off the ground, and it's not hard to imagine that the Coyotes could have no more than one or two more seasons left in the desert.

The big difference is you don't dilute TV revenue. So 700 million in TV over 30 teams was just over 20 million per team. So that cash flow might be worth say 200 million dollars. So the moving price should be less than the new price because the revenue streams are maintained.
The NHL also will have a relocation fee which limits the amount that current Coyote owners can get so the owners always win.

That, and Houston is quite different from Hamilton, KC or Saskatoon.
