If we're gonna pluck a Blackhawk. Id probably look at Anisimov. 2nd or 3rd line Center. Could be cheap-ish to acquire. If we want to go hog wild on building a deep cup team. He'd definitely be something worth looking at. Favorable salary for a couple more seasons, Big body, good defensively for the most part. Big body and good skill. Contract runs out two years after this one and he'd be 32. 4.5m cap hit which is kind of a sweet spot for a FW addition without crimping the Tkachuk Negotiations.

No thanks, he is another Backlund which we only need one of. If we are looking for a C it needs to be another top 6 C.

Look at the current situation. Derek Ryan is the #2 C in lieu of Backlund. If we had another Backlund, we'd be pretty okay. But that's the point. You'd have 2 Backlund types at #2 and #3 C. For a big run that's precisely what you want to eliminate the match up game.

The packages better be insane if were trading either of Gaudreau or Tkachuk. Those are deals that are just destined to bite you in the ass.

Wut. Why are we trading gaudreau or tkachuk? We need another 2nd line centre and a goalie. Neither of those require trading a top 30 player in the league and so its stupid to even talk about trading those two.

It was said by some that for the Flames to be a legit contender the Flames would need to see exponential maturation and amelioration from Jankowski and Bennett.

They need to grasp the opportunities they are given and become consistent and bonafide positive contributors. That has not happened yet.

On the positive side, all of the young D are making a strong case as top 4 D , long term.

A few random thoughts...

You don’t even think about trading guys like Gaudreau, Monahan and Tkachuk until you get some kind of idea of how this team will perform in the playoffs. We have an idea from 2 years ago, which wasn’t great Elliott notwithstanding. But let’s see how these guys play under Peters when it counts the most.

A big no from me to trading for someone to play with Neal. You don’t throw good money after bad so until we see some signs of life from the Real Deal, he can play with the fairly high quality group of forwards the Flames already have.

I still like Bennett and can see his usefulness, but if someone out there still sees 4th overall pick when they look at him, why wouldn’t you be seriously talking to them about a deal? The other factor is we have no idea what kind of money he would be looking for next year. It shouldn’t be a lot.

Rittich and Smith just might be enough of a tandem to roll with the rest of year. I didn’t think so a few weeks ago.

If the trade deadline were today I wouldn’t be unhappy if BT were to stand pat. It’d be awesome if you could pick up a 2nd rounder as we’ve seen this year just how valuable they can be, but that would seem to be impossible. Maybe Bennett for a veteran forward and a nice pick thrown in?

A couple years ago I though exploring a MacKinnon Gaudreau trade made sense for both teams after a period of failure for both teams. Right now I don't think it makes sense to even consider trading Johnny or any other key pieces. Team is winning and chemistry is good.

It will be interesting to see if they can get him extended again in 2 years though. As an UFA with prices going up it will probably cost 10ish a year by then and there have always been those rumors that he wants to go back east.

Too bad Treliving didn't go with a bit of a higher aav to buy a couple extra years on this deal in retrospect. That and not getting the Tkachuk deal done this summer will make the cap picture a bit tighter in years to come.

If the rumours are true, then maybe Johnny didn't want the extra couple years and he wants to be UFA in his prime.

But unless that's true, and unless you get closer to that date and you aren't a contender, you don't trade Johnny.

Agreed.

You have a player like Gaudreau in his prime and at a reasonable contract, then it's time to live in the now. Anything can happen in the future, but you don't give up the present because of fear for the unknown.

Plus winning has a way of making players stay. Like Detroit for many years. I like Detroit and am not slamming it, but if not for the fact they had a winning reputation for several years, they probably wouldn't have been the magnet for players that they were.

If were still a top team come end of the season I wouldnt mind seeing a move for some middle six help. Someone with skill that will improve the offense. If we could have three legit scoring lines that would go a long way.

For a big run you want two top end C. Backlund is a perfect 3rd line shutdown C and Ryan is pretty good too and a bonus as a 4th. You don't want an Anisimov or a Backlund at #2, you want a Monahan or a Duchene.

The rumours are b.s as far as I can tell. I have never heard anything except that JG loves it in Calgary. If he leaves after this contract it won't be because he wants to, it will be a cap issue.
