I would think, he will play very little over the remaining 2 years of his contract.

Yeah, the guy says he should be the starting shortstop or he's not going be happy. Meanwhile, he's 34, hasn't played in a year and a half, and his skills and performance were already diminishing before this long term injury hiatus.
He needs a reality check for sure and by the sounds of it Atkins just gave it to him. Definitely could see it getting ugly.

		| And the way the trade chatter around Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez has evolved since the General Managers Meetings a month ago – when Ross Atkins unequivocally said “no one likes Marcus more than we do, we value him the most” – a deal for one of them, at least, suddenly seems a lot more tangible.
Consider that Monday, when asked if other teams were starting to value the two ace-calibre starters more similarly to the Blue Jays, Atkins replied: “I would say that’s fair.”

“It doesn’t by any means suggest that they’re going to be traded. Far from that,” he added. “As you start to understand in terms of the discussions you’re having, and offers that are made, or even in just talking about comparable trades, then it starts to make more sense to have continued discussions. The likelihood of those guys being moved is not high. It’s just we have to entertain if there’s a way to make the organization better.”

 ....

The Blue Jays met with five agencies – including Paul Cohen, Troy Tulowtizki’s agent – and five teams to talk trade in their Delano hotel suite at the Mandalay Bay resort. After saying last week that it was “unlikely” Tulowitzki could contribute at an above average level for 140 games, all Atkins offered on his recovering shortstop is that “he’s in an incredible state of mind, he feels great physically, he looks great, he’s moving around well, so all positive signs.”

 ...

The Blue Jays have been drawing interest in their catching, including on Russell Martin,

 ...

A rival executive described Blue Jays closer Ken Giles as “available.”

 ...

An agent, unprompted, on Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro. “Just give him time. What he’s doing is going to work."

Yikes...the true definition of a sunk cost.
38 million to not play for them.

 Ouch.

If we were going to release him, couldn’t we have just traded him for some B level prospects and kept his salary on our book for the team we traded him to? IE like when we acquired Upton.

Oh boy. An utter disaster but better to move on from him. He didn’t seem interested in playing a supporting role so I think it was ultimately the right move.

Man, never saw the Tulo era ending like this. Was so pumped when they traded for the guy and then things the past couple years went completely sideways. Kinda sad, but he was done there. Too bad.

That’s going to be a line item in Rogers Financial Statements just like BJ Ryan! They must be seething at Anthopolis.

Im guessing his Full no-trade clause may have got in the way.

So best scenario for him is he gets released, Jays pay him the full $38M, and then he can go sign with another team of his choice and make more salary on top of that.

Ryan Pinder mentioned Tulo being done way back in last training camp.

#BlueJays will still be responsible for the full $38 million on Tulowitzki’s deal

Crazy. Well it's the right move, it sucks for the Jays to have that salary eating up space.
Edit: There is a video on Sportsnet titled "GM Atkins sees Tulo, Martin in Blue Jays 2019 Roster"...does that mean Martin is next to go??

Hopefully Martin, Smoak, Pillar, Stroman and Sanchez are next out the door.
Scorch the earth, start over fresh. (although I'd be fine keeping Martin, but I doubt he's interested in being the depth on the roster, and Jansen needs to play a ton)

Atkins has a real opportunity of packaging guys and changing the roster this year to truly make it more mobile. Now with Tulo gone he can deal Martin, Smoak and those would be three guys who are slow. So you bring in guys who will likely never be as good as any of those guys but at least the culture changes to development and keeping the pitchers on their toes, while the legitimate young guys on the team develop over time. That Tulowitzki contract must have been a tough pill for Rogers to swallow where Shapiro has to probably sell his all to justify it (tax break in earnings?). Anyway, I don’t expect much at all this year. In all likelihood a probable terrible terrible year. But if there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train, I’m fine with it. I’m still sceptical of Atkins as a talent evaluator or a trade return maximizer.
