Isn't Greta bar like an arcade game place? Is it really a higher end spot? I've never been but seen some instagram posts from there.

Kinjo? The sushi scene in Calgary isn't great to begin with, but honestly that's like the Dennys of sushi.

I also think its true that the noise encourages more drinking. I distinctly remember ordering an extra drink at the Calcutta Yelling Club just because my throat was going hoarse after an hour of attempting to have a discussion with company.

Sukiyaki House on 9th has very good sushi. Also Sushi Bar Zapang in Bridgeland.

What differentiates a Kinjo and a higher quality place, and where would one go for higher quality sushi.

As mentioned above Sukiyaki House and Sushi Bar Zipang are two of the best.
Fish quality and freshness is the biggest difference. You usually won’t be able to tell much difference between places if all you order is rolls. But straight nigiri sushi and sashimi quality can vary widely. Higher end places will get some rarer types of fish here.
Want to really see quality? Go to one of the good places and get the omakase. Basically a chefs tasting of what he thinks is the best and freshest fish.
I’ve had a bit of omakase from sukiyaki house and zipang is one of my favourites. Actually had some really good fish quality at gori and gun as well

Ke Charcoal is really good too!
Don’t go to Kinjo unless price point is the factor, its low quality. A step above mall sushi.
Another great place is big catch in Heritage. They are a bunch of young guys who take great pride in their product. Lower volume and they love their work.

Big Catch was my secret go to place since they were in the farmers market. Favorite place in the city now.
I would recommend not getting any of their super special rolls (think first page on the menu). Didn't enjoy them that much but all of their other rolls are very very good.
Would get rodeo rider and nine one one for sure, they are my staples.

When I lived in Calgary, Sushi Hiro was one of my favorite places. I'm not sure if it still retains the same quality, but it was always amazing when I went there.

I went to Point Sushi in Chinatown last weekend. It's pretty fun because it's the first "bullet train" sushi place in Calgary. I would say most of the food was medium quality and not the cheapest (nor anywhere near the most expensive) but that it was really fun ordering on the tablet then waiting for your food to rip over on the little train. The red tuna we had was actually amazing as well, excellent cut. They have some hot foods as well, and a lot of dessert options.
It's fun, I recommend.

Some of their knife skills are insane when they do stuff like taking avocado and making them look like dragon scales

That was our young family's go to place if we ever had an event downtown. Thank goodness La Vita Bella is still open.

I come in at lunch and get the bento box. Best one in the city anf super simple.
Their rolls are great. What sets them appart is their commitment to high quality product. Always fresh and well presented.
