What does the Kunitz elbow have to do with a Gio “leg trip”? I’m with you but the way Kunitz should have got something, but why does one missed call equal no more suspensions? Is that actually the argument, Player Safety missed the Kunitz call so they should pack up for the year, all the rest of the plays that should warrant discipline must go un-punished because they missed one?

Two wrongs don't make a right. Kunitz deserved a suspension. So did Gio. 1/2 is better than 0/2 in terms of making the right call for the safety of players in the league. It's just too bad both worked against the Flames.

Consistency yes. Logic no. Precedence no. It is logical for Gio to get a suspension for injuring another player and follows knee on knee precedence.
So you want them to be consistently bad? Oh yeah that makes sense.

It's a call for consistency. Direct targeted hit to the head, no suspension, with a league that just settled a concussion lawsuit and needs to be careful. Trip from a player with no prior suspensions, 2 game suspension, for the kind of play that has never been previously disciplined with a suspension, as far as I am aware. All within a few games.
Personally, I think we need to take all head shots out, whether intentional or otherwise. The player making the hit needs to do so responsibly. Those are the hits that lead to long-term brain injury and its consequences. Brains are not as easily repaired or healed as knees, and in the end, are more important (I say this as someone who deals with the consequences of concussions on a regular basis).

It was a dirty play. I’m really surprised at the uproar and don’t see two games as such a big deal in the whole scheme of things.

It has nothing to do with the Gio suspension, I just don’t think it looks good on them when they claim to want to crack down on head shots and then do nothing about that. Of course they shouldn’t pack it up and do nothing. It’s just frustrating and I’m venting.

Totally get it. The only thing I don’t like is the vibe from our very educated group of fans in here (I mean that, not at all sarcastic) is just a little over the top. We’d have lost it if the same play was on Johnny.
The two arguments to defend the positions seem to be:
1. There’s no consistency from the NHL. I agree, sign me up, but doesn’t make Gio innocent.
2. Gio’s knee was a different kind of knee that isn’t a bad knee so doesn’t qualify in the same bucket as previously suspended knees. I guess it’s devatable, but I don’t buy it and this one is making us look like a bunch of homers.

The league has become soft. I have been watching NHL hockey since the late 70's, and although I have been happy with how the game has progressed, there is a lot of things that I feel have really regressed.

I don't think Gio did deserve a suspension. But that's the thing with these forums, many different points of views and opinions.

Brian Marchements looking for work. How many people were livid when he joined the Flames because of his egregious kneeing of Flames players. Then the knees he gave as a Flame?

From what I can tell it's pretty much split down the middle. Most don't see a dirty knee, some do.

This suspension is a total joke especially with the crazy amount of what seem like questionable hits that directly result in an injury that dont even get a phone call from the NHL. This two game suspension is absurd and once again makes fans question both the NHL as being inconsistent and being selective what teams they nail and which teams they don't.
Gio should not even recieved a phone call based on the NHL's track record of inconsistent decisions this season.
