in the odd game where the Oilers are winning and there is an empty net, he will be out there leaving the zone early trying to get the easy empty net points.. what a leader

Looks like he's only going to get more ice time

Hitchcock on McDavid's added minutes: 'I think we can play him 25-plus'

After Connor McDavid logged over 28 minutes of ice-time in Wednesday's win over the Blues, there's been concerns about whether the Oilers captain will be able to handle the extra minutes under Ken Hitchcock in the long-term. The Oilers head coach discusses his reasoning for playing McDavid more.

Why? At some point you have to admit that if McDavid cant get it done in 23 minutes the extra 2 are just punishment at this point.

Seriously, saying you're going to play McDavid 25+ minutes a night is just a polite way of saying:

"We're giving McDavid more ice time because, frankly, the rest of you suck. You suck long and you suck hard. If we're to have any success it will only be because you have been prohibited from participating.

May God have mercy on your souls...because sure as hell nobody else is going to. Good day."

If I am Hitchcock, and I'm looking down my bench, and if I am being honest with myself, I am going to try and find every way possible to maximize his ice-time. Because it is the only chance I have of winning.

And the only way I can keep my job as an NHL head coach is to win hockey games.

I have been enjoying this stretch of the schedule with alternating nights of cheering for the Flames then cheering against the Oilers all leading up to the big game on Sunday.

The Oilers have no choice but to play McDavid until he burns out. Their lineup is almost AHL level when his line is not on the ice.

And Kreider, on his next contract negotiations, be like: "See this chart showing generational players?...."

Chart is embarrassing... McDavid has never been a goal guy, and he's tied for 7th in points.

Yeah, but if you conveniently cut off the top row of the chart so nobody can see what the numbers are measuring, the rubes may not notice that.

That aside, one might think a ‘generational player’ ought to be better than 7th in the league at the one thing he does best. It certainly isn't his defensive prowess, physical play, ‘clutch’ quality or intangibles that earned him that label.

Fun fact: generational doesn't mean being near the top.

For comparison's sake, let's compare what another generational talent was doing at the same point in his career. In the 1982/83 season, Gretzky (also born in January, just like McDavid) was also 21 (just like McDavid).

That year, on Dec 7th, Marion Stastny was in 2nd place in points, with 46 (one less than Rantanen currently has). Gretzky meanwhile, had 73, a full 59% more than Stastny, and double where McDavid currently sits, despite the overall leaderboard being surprisingly similar. For instance, Mike Rogers was 7th with 37 points (to McDavid's 36) and 50th place was a tie with 26 points, just like what we find today.

Now that, folks, is what being a generational talent looks like!

Seems like the Oilers coaches only strategy has been to play McDavid more and more and hope it works. The Oilers were basically given the keys to a ferrari and have absolutely no other vehicles to use. So they’re using that Ferrari for everything... long road trips, city-commuting, off-roading, driving to the end of the driveway to get the mail, plowing their sidewalks, hauling garbage to the dump, Costco runs, etc. Absolutely everything. And they can’t help themselves when they get behind the wheel of that Ferrari... they put the pedal to the floor all the time and scream “Woo!! Look how awesome my Ferrari is!” But they never get anywhere cause they’re constantly lost.

They’ll be very disappointed when that finely-tuned machine breaks down from being constantly being pushed too hard by an incompetent driver.

Generational players turn Rob Brown into a 1.69 PPG guy only to see him turn into a 0.7 PPG guy the first full year away from the generational player.

McDavid took Patrick Maroon to the heights of being a 0.56 PPG and now Maroon has fallen to a 0.57 PPG in his games away from Connor since he was traded.
