Good job Lomberg and Peters! Eat the suspension and fine to have each other's back.

If Gio and Backlund miss the Oilers game I may consider having to cut a fool!

FWIW, Giordano practicing normally today and Prout isn't in the pairings being reported by media. So hopefully a good sign in terms of a potential suspension.

I wouldn't be surprised if Giordano gets a game, though that angle a few posts up does not look very egregious at all.

What frustrates me is how the Kunitz elbow did not receive a review. Far worse, and a clear shot to the head.

I don't think anybody is arguing Gio is in the wrong. Thats a penalty. Its kind of a stupid penalty too. Why did he kick his leg out in the first place? Thats going to result in a tripping penalty 9 times out of 10.

A suspendable knee on knee? I have a hard time seeing that.

As for Lomberg, I have no problem with Peters sending him out, or with the fine that he deserves for it.

I also have no problem with Lomberg getting a game or two. And I 100% support what he did.

Would they have done the hearing already though?

Was Kunitz basically sentenced to "Time already served"?

I do wonder if he hadn't been ejected from the game, if maybe he would have received something.

Flames Poor Mans Don Cherry

The entire game was slewed against the Flames as far as penalties went. Watching the Giordano penalty call on Koivu, was borderline at best, looks like skate on skate to me, should not have been called in my opinion. Dumbas' hit on Backlund was a charge pure and simple, in addition, Dumba left his feet, yet nothing called. Lomberg was right to stick up for his teammate, Peters was also right in saying, ref the entire game, don't put your whistle away for the last three minutes, or words to that effect. It seems to me that certain Referees have it in for the Flames, whenever they do a game in the Dome. We get hit with a triple whammy on this, it's garbage if you ask me. The league is always giving out information on suspensions and fines for players, but suspensions and fines on officials is never brought to light. Everything should be transparent and above board for officials as well, they have to answer to someone. This kind of officiating from last night runs the entire league down.

Agreed. Now Backlund is skating bent over, head down, at about elbow level. You’re going to get hurt doing that and I tell my son that constantly.

Dumba doesn’t have to smoke him, but if you allow open ice hitting these things are going to happen.

I don’t know what the answer is honestly.

I have no issue with Gio getting a game for that knee, he's had a few in his career (I have an issue from an impact to our team perspective, but no issue it the league feels it's warranted)

I have no issue with Lomberg getting the automatic game for what he did (nor do I have an issue with him doing it, needed to be done). Given it wasn't an illegal line change, I will have an issue if he gets anything more. Nothing different about what he did last night other than timing vs. what Kassian did a few weeks back with no consequences.

It wasn't even a knee, it was a trip.

Just because Koivu is made of glass, doesn't mean a suspension is warranted every time he gets hurt.

I'm so sick of Boudreau's whining.

The answer is exactly what the league is (supposedly) doing - put the onus on the attacking player to not go hard at someone who is vulnerable.

All Dumba had to do was stand there - simply get in Backlund's way - and Backlund would have 'checked himself' out of the play.

He was wrong, it was a tripping and he was penalized late in the game for it. It was not Knee on Knee, it was not dirty.

But that is exactly what we are taking about, a hit to the head! Primary and first contact is with the head, stupid me thought that was ill legal.

Looked into this...was told skates on the ice at contact, not an illegal Check to the Head as there is some head contact but head is not the main point of contact, elbow is tucked. Clean hit.

For comparison, this got two games:

I think this league is at a point where the officiating is so poor in quality that they hesitate to suspend players when there was no penalty on the play to avoid further embarrassment.

The Dumba hit was clean. The fact that Backlund was leaning forward and put his head out in front of him doesn't mean he suddenly can't be hit. It was a perfect example of what a good hit in today's NHL should be. It just sucks that Backlund got hurt.

It’s not that simple. A player becomes vulnerable in a split second and in a game that rewards hard hits, it’s impossible to legislate out hard hits to “vulnerable” players IMO. Watch minor hockey and look at how often kids expose themselves along the boards. Hits to vulnerable players are almost unavoidable. In my opinion.

So you could skate hunched over, head leaning forward and make yourself unhittable.
