If that is Yamamoto's dad, then the source of his disappointment is most certainly that he is stuck watching eye-gaugingly, suicide-inductively boring, bad hockey while his son is playing in Bakersfield, California.

People keep saying stuff like this, and I really think that a Lindros-type trade is simply not possible in today's NHL. The cap sets massive constrictions on the ability of what a team can move or add, and the value of draft picks is higher today than possibly ever. I don't think the Oilers would get an offer for McDavid on which they could pull the trigger, because I don't think any team would risk the cost that it would require to add him.
McDavid may end p being traded one day, and it will most certainly be the biggest trade in the last couple of decades. But there is no way the return would anything comparable to what Quebec got back for Eric Lindros.

Look at how many pieces the Avs got for Duchene. I think of Edmonton put McDavid on the block they could easily demand 6-8 quality pieces. When would there ever be a proven generational 22 year old with 7 years on his deal hit the market?
Deep organizations could easily make that deal and would be happy to do it. I would easily part with a package of Monahan, Hanifin, 1st, 2nd, Bennett, Parsons without blinking an eye. Having said that the Flames are deep. They would still have Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Backlund, Gio, Brodie, Hamonic, Valimaki which is still a far deeper lineup than the Oilers currently surround McDavid with.
I know that deal would never happen but the Oilers could get a package like that from a lot of teams in the league if they moved McDavid

There is no possible way of moving Lucic and his contract. That is a sunk cost with no reprieve.

I'd move Nurse+ for for a top 6 winger for RNH.
|
That would have to be a massive "plus." Nurse is probably a third-pairing defenseman on most NHL teams. IF he is the centrepiece in a deal the return is most likely a young middle-six 'tweener.
Quote:
I'd move one of Puljujarvi/Yamamoto+ for a middle second pairing defender.
|
Again, what? The plan is to move a young NHL/AHL tweeter for an established top four defenseman? What team is making this deal? As of today, Yamamoto and Puljujarvi are both projects, whose value is in the ballpark of high-end but underperforming prospects.
Quote:
I'd look to sign another second pairing defender in free agency
|
So, the net result then would be: a third/second line 'tweeter playing on one of the top-two wings, a second-pair and third-pair defenseman playing in the top four with two other #3–4 defensemen, and a project.
Quote:
Could also probably find a decent 3c as well in free agency.
|
What an embarrassment of riches.

I don't think this return is all that close to what Eric Lindros netted, which was my point.

Like I said, I don't think it could happen, and I will only believe it when I see it. The pressure on the Oilers would be so intense that it would likely require more than any team could reasonably afford to move in order to complete a deal. Moreover, I think the only possible scenario in which McDavid would be moved is one in which he would insist to be traded. This would almost certainly dramatically reduce the value of any possible return.

In any potential trade, money in, money out would have to be close to even for both teams.
McDavid at 12.5m, so other teams would be sending somewhere around that number in cap hit back:
EIther:
a very good player ($8-9M), plus a OK depth player ($3-4 million) + Picks
Or
Two Pretty good players ($6-7M each) + Picks.
Not impossible, but its hard to balance out a trade that works for both sides - both in terms of both sides liking the players they are getting back, AND in making it work for both sides within salary cap parameters.

They're proud hockey dads and each one is thinking - "look at the bums my kid has to work with" and then grimacing because they can't vent to anyone sitting around them.

He's probably thinking that this was a ####hole organization when his son left it the first time and a decade later, it's still a ####hole organization.

Hopefully Nugent-Hopkins doesn't marry Smith-Pelly's sister and their kids have the surname of Nugent-Hopkins-Smith-Pelly. Even worse if they had a son named John-Michael.
With the 1st selection in the 2036 Entry Draft, the Edmonton Oilers are proud to select John-Michael Nugent-Hopkins-Smith-Pelly.
