Right now is really the best of times in a way. The Oilers are playing incredibly sad and boring .500 hockey while effectively shutting down the aspirations of getting McDavid to the top of the scoring race. All of that while noone is doing a single progressive thing to deal with the multitude of issues that is holding the organization firmly rooted at rock bottom. The team is currently suspended in a no man's land where they are neither good enough nor bad enough to really do anything, so everybody are just waiting, and what more could we really wish for? It's the epitome of no good really.

He's going to get fired. It's only a matter of if it's during the season or after. They have an interim coach so they will probably have the new GM pick the next coach.

I'm not saying the Oilers have had it rough, but all those guys are in their 30s.

That lineup is brutal without McDavid. Absolutely brutal. There was a thread on the other site about the best young cores in the league, and for some reason people still thought Edmonton deserved to be on the list strictly because of McDavid.
He's a gem no doubt, but one player does not make a core. The proof was in that Dallas game. Oiler fans should be thankful that McDavid has for the most part stayed healthy during his career. Even as a Flames' fan, I would shudder if they had to play without him long term.

And what do we get from the media? Excuses. And 'they tried hard'.
The Oilers, and their fans, deserve everything that's been happening to them.

I've resigned myself to this a long time ago. It really doesnt matter.
There is no miracle worker GM in the League who could fix this team. They could hire Ken Holland or Steve Yzerman and it wouldnt matter.
Why?
Because the last Miracle Worker they hired in Ol' Petey there screwed things up 7 ways from Sunday.
They are in Cap Hell with a terrible, terrible team.
They are supposedly shopping Talbot, which doesnt really matter because whatever cash he was expecting they've just handed all leverage to Koskinen, the cap is only supposed to go up ~$3.5M, and they have way too much cash tied into too many crappy players.
The more likely scenario is that if/when Petey gets canned they're going to hire some lame-duck GM whose job it is to slash and burn what he can out of the roster and then be fired as soon as there are some assets and flexibility.
Then they'll hire a GM to take over from there.
Like they did with Tambellini and then...oh...they've already done this and yet here they are still.
I am telling you, I cant wait until next year when they get the 'Band Back Together.'
GM: Kevin Lowe
HC: Craig MacTavish
Are there any other Oilers collecting their Canada Pension that want to supplement their income by standing behind the Oilers bench dispensing 30+ year old hockey wisdom?

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Chiarelli is most definitely a lame duck GM now. A long playoff run is all that can save him. The new GM will bring in a new coach and the entirety of the Edmonton Oilers media fan club will excitedly rush out and pen dozens of articles about how the new regime will most certainly return the Oilers to greatness.

That's the screen from when Edmonton scored and the PBP guy is all "Look at the dads - some signs of life in the Oilers".
Mr. Brodziak definitely not impressed. Same with Mr. N-H.
Why do a couple wear 18? There's no such player on the roster. Are they Kassian and Lucic's dads?

Keep in mind we were all terrified that the end of Oiler misery was upon us when MacTavish was shown the door ... worked out just fine.

It would never happen but look how Quebec turned into a powerhouse trading Lindros. Although they did have better building blocks even before trading Lindros. The return for Mcdavid would be insane and they could hire a GM with some sort of strategic planning with plans to stabilize such a crappy franchise.

They aren't going to get a good GM because no smart one would take on the poison pills that Chia has embedded. The best they can do is someone to take the fall for a few years, try to get rid of contracts and draft better. Sort of the Feaster situation.
But I bet it ends up being Keith Gretzky.
