Your opinion isn't based on reality. Just seems to be your own skewed perspective of the situation.
You state that the Flames ownership isn't interested in being part of the community. And yet, they continue to be involved in the community as much if not moreso than any NHL team.
And then you ignore additional facts that the Flames and City are actively negotiating for a new arena and state that the "community does not want to partner with the team".

Edwards is interested in money first and foremost, than that makes logical sense to me.

If that's the case why wouldn't he have sold already? Or sold to local investors?
By the way, you know that a lot of NHL owners don't live in the same city's as their team, right?

Having a contrary opinion is fine. Having a contrary opinion based on shaky evidence is less fine. Have a contrary opinion based on shaky evidence and claiming it as inevitable is not fine.
Perhaps you're the one that's not being realistic.

I think it's time to really ramp up this thread with a ton of news expected this week.
What I wonder is, will the NHL change its schedule? Knowing you have 32 teams for probably a pretty good length of time, do they move to a more balanced schedule? With the most minimum amount of changes, you could do:
32 games against the other conference (16 x 2)
24 games against the other division within your conference (8 x 3)
26 games against your own division (5 x 4 and only 3 games against two other teams)
Or you could do:
32 games against the other conference (16 x 2)
16 games against the other division within your conference (8 x 2)
28 games within your own division (7 x 4)
4 wildcard games (additional games within division to promote rivalries, Oilers/Flames, maybe a historic rivalry like Blackhawks/Red Wings, etc.)
It could also be an opportunity for the NHL to reduce the total number of games. I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas.

That would reduce HRR in turn reducing salaries for players.
Never going to happen without a new CBA that addresses such issues.

This is true. If Seattle is set to start in, say, 2021 it could become a bargaining chip in the upcoming negotiations, though (whether or not the intent is real on the NHL's part).

Yeah if anything I could see them going back to 84 before they ever consider less games

84 would certainly balance it.
16 x 2 = 32 vs. other conference
8 x 3 = 24 vs. other division within conference
7 x 4 = 28 vs. division
Players would probably take issue with that also.
I guess the other argument is if you reduced the schedule down to 78 or 76 games, it creates room for that "play-in" round which could result in even more revenue (factoring in gate but also TV rights) than an 82-game schedule as it stands right now with 16 playoff teams.

I would do a full overhaul.
4 divisions. 8 teams per.
play home and home against the other 3 divisions (24 X 2) = 48
play 5 games against everyone in your division = 35
top four teams from each division make playoffs. You have to battle through your entire division.
the "Final Four" teams get reseeded based on regular season point totals.

I would still keep the wildcards but only the 5th place team crosses over. Two 4th place teams cannot both crossover, that's stupid.

I agree. It's weird that a team that finishes first in their division could potentially get "rewarded" with a tougher first-round matchup and a more difficult travel schedule.

8 divisions of 4 teams in each conference. Division winners advance to playoffs. Teams with four next best records make it. Playoff seedings based on records (division winners 1 to 4) and next best (5 to 8).
Schedule doesn't have to be balanced.
Similar to NFL format but with 4 wild cards instead of 2. Flames would play with Vancouver, Seattle and Edmonton.
Although deep down I want a relatively balanced schedule and all teams seeded 1 to 16 for the playoffs personally.

My thoughts....
2 Conferences - Campbell and Wales
2 Tiers per Conference - Campbell (Smythe and Norris) and Wales (Adams and Patrick)
2 Divisions per Tier based on geographic locations and/or timezones
Games played will be from a Calgary perspective.
Conference (Campbell Conference)
Tiers (Smythe and Norris)
Smythe North Division (CGY, EDM, VAN, SEA) - 6 games vs. own Division (6x3 = 18)
Smythe Pacific Division (ANA, LA, SJ, VGK) - 4 games vs. own Tier (4x4 = 16)
Norris South Division (ARI, COL, DAL, NSH) - 2 games vs. own Conference (2x4 = 8)
Norris Central Division (CHI, MIN, STL, WPG) - 2 games vs. own Conference (2x4 = 8)
Conference (Wales Conference)
Tiers (Adams and Patrick) - 2 games vs. other Conference (2x16 = 32)
Adams Central (DET, CBJ, PHI, PIT)
Adams North (BUF, MTL, OTT, TOR)
Patrick Atlantic (BOS, NJ, NYI, NYR)
Patrick South (CAR, FLA, TB, WAS)
Total will be 82 games still and promote divisional rivalry. Some might think the inter-divisional games might be too much.
Playoff format can be either:
A) Top two teams from each Division make the playoffs
B) Top team from each division make the playoffs and four wildcard spots

Can't wait until the NHL starts giving out the participation ribbons.
Expanding the playoffs is nonsense.
MLB has it right. Want to make the playoffs? Be a good team.

Said no one ever. Nothing says exciting where 80% of the teams are out half way into the season....

On the expanded playoff discussion. I'd love to see a wildcard as 10th place in conference plays 9th (9th at home) in a one off game, winner plays 8th (at home) much like baseball. Gives a ray of hope to the middling teams and would be great for the exciting factor.

I'd be down for 9 vs 10 in each conference play a best of three for the #1 draft pick. The losers can play a one game for #3.

You mean the 2-3 "good" teams who buy their way into the playoffs every year? No one should ever follow the model of baseball. It's barely a sport.

Sounds like someone needs a participation ribbon.
