Hanifin would probably have turned into a tire fire like Nurse if they drafted him. With defensemen u have to really develop them nicely and if u throw them to the wolves like Edmonton wouldve done it wouldnt have been good for him. Look what happened to Petry and Schultz after they left Eddy.

I dont think anyone was more happy that the Oilers won the Lottery than Hanifin. How ironic he plays for the Flames now lol.

You may be right. But it is an argument all these guys have when they stroll into the negotiations. I suspect he sets the low end bar for the AAV on the Marner deal.

Zack Kassian is such a GD plug.

I still laugh anytime I remember Lucic makes more than Backlund or Lindholm

I wonder if the Flames track players they didn't pick as part of their review. We do seem to covet talented players not sure what happened there!

Revisionist draft history isn’t worth it. All teams blow picks and get lucky with some. Except the oilers, of course. They seem to a tougher time with the whole drafting thing outside of being gifted the best player in a generation.

What happened is that Brian Burke was the interim GM during the season (he hired Treliving in May - Treliving was at draft). While GM, Burke led the scouting meeting in December and as every GM does instructed the scouts on the type of player he wants.

After Feaster’s imperative to get high IQ, skilled players regardless of size, Burke wanted bigger, truculent players added to the system.

I’m not an anti Burke guy but he wanted bigger players and if you look at 2014 draft that’s what the scouts and Button delivered. Treliving had his own ideas about the types of players he covets and you see it in the subsequent drafts.

Young talented players can be a lot harder to acquire over bigger truculent players. I am glad we have BT injecting lots of skilled guys into the system. The current Flames remind me a lot of those old skilled Detroit teams. So much fun to watch and can pretty much score anywhere. Not sure our bottom lines are where we want them, but if we can a inject a bit more skill on those 2 lines, I think we could be even stronger.

I don’t want to make excuses but I’m of the opinion that CGY has the skill for the bottom 6 but there is still some settling in going on.

Ryan, Neal, Czarnik are all new to the team and Ryan and Czarnik are new to the Western Conference. I definitely think it’s more physical in the West.

Having said that I can see signs of all the struggling (offensively) players starting to show life.

I said it during the China trip and believe it fully now - this is going to be a great year. The style of play, the depth, the overall ability of the team is incredible.

What we’ve seen of late is just the tip of the iceberg. The team can play much better - that’s the amazing part.

Because we don't have the flux capacitor

Point was drafted 79th overall...the entire league passed on him multiple times. Drafting with hind sight is easy.

I mean are you mad at the Flames for passing on Pavel Datsyuk six times?

You're right, but the thing that bothers us about Point is that he was shining right in our back yard, and should have been identified by our scouting staff as a far better prospect than Smith
